How strong a magnet do I need for magnet fishing?
Our search magnets are rated between 32 kg and 680 kg of pull force. The rating is measured as a straight, perpendicular pull on thick, clean steel — in a river you almost never pull that way, so treat it as a figure for comparing models rather than a promise. For a first magnet, mid-range models around 300 kg are easier to handle than the heaviest ones, which are simply hard to lift once they grab a submerged object.
What rope and shackle should I pair with the magnet?
Match the whole chain, not just the magnet. Our ø10 mm rope is rated at 1592 kg and the M10 shackle at 320 kg, so with a 310 kg magnet the shackle is the limiting part. Whatever you buy, check the rating of every component separately and take the lowest one as the rating of the set. The knot at the eye is usually weaker than the rope itself.
What is the difference between a single-sided and a double-sided fishing magnet?
A single-sided magnet holds on one face only, so it has to land the right way round. A double-sided one grabs from either face, which matters when you throw it into moving water and cannot control how it lands. The trade-off is weight and price for the same nominal pull force — the F200 GOLD DUAL, for instance, is rated at 601 kg against 310 kg for the single-sided F200 GOLD.
Does the pull force rating apply underwater?
Water itself is not the problem — it is not magnetic and barely changes the force. What changes it is everything else: silt and rust between the magnet and the find, a curved or thin surface instead of a flat plate, and a pull that comes at an angle rather than straight off. Expect a fraction of the catalogue figure in real conditions, and choose the mounting point and coating with that in mind.

Disadvantages

Characteristics of disadvantages of neodymium magnets and proposals for their use:
  • They are fragile upon too strong impacts. To avoid cracks, it is worth securing magnets using a steel holder. Such protection not only shields the magnet but also improves its resistance to damage
  • Neodymium magnets decrease their force under the influence of heating. As soon as 80°C is exceeded, many of them start losing their force. Therefore, we recommend our special magnets marked [AH], which maintain stability even at temperatures up to 230°C
  • When exposed to humidity, magnets usually rust. For applications outside, it is recommended to use protective magnets, such as magnets in rubber or plastics, which secure oxidation as well as corrosion.
  • Due to limitations in creating nuts and complex forms in magnets, we propose using a housing - magnetic mount.
  • Possible danger resulting from small fragments of magnets are risky, if swallowed, which becomes key in the aspect of protecting the youngest. Additionally, tiny parts of these devices can complicate diagnosis medical after entering the body.
  • High unit price – neodymium magnets cost more than other types of magnets (e.g. ferrite), which can limit application in large quantities

Holding force characteristics

Maximum lifting force for a neodymium magnet – what affects it?

Holding force of 340.00 kg is a measurement result executed under the following configuration:
  • on a plate made of mild steel, effectively closing the magnetic field
  • whose transverse dimension is min. 10 mm
  • with a surface perfectly flat
  • with zero gap (without paint)
  • for force applied at a right angle (in the magnet axis)
  • at conditions approx. 20°C

Practical lifting capacity: influencing factors

Real force is influenced by specific conditions, mainly (from most important):
  • Air gap (between the magnet and the plate), as even a tiny clearance (e.g. 0.5 mm) leads to a reduction in force by up to 50% (this also applies to paint, rust or dirt).
  • Pull-off angle – note that the magnet holds strongest perpendicularly. Under sliding down, the capacity drops significantly, often to levels of 20-30% of the nominal value.
  • Wall thickness – thin material does not allow full use of the magnet. Part of the magnetic field passes through the material instead of converting into lifting capacity.
  • Material type – the best choice is pure iron steel. Stainless steels may have worse magnetic properties.
  • Surface condition – ground elements guarantee perfect abutment, which increases force. Uneven metal reduce efficiency.
  • Temperature – heating the magnet results in weakening of induction. It is worth remembering the maximum operating temperature for a given model.

Lifting capacity testing was carried out on plates with a smooth surface of suitable thickness, under a perpendicular pulling force, in contrast under attempts to slide the magnet the lifting capacity is smaller. Additionally, even a slight gap between the magnet’s surface and the plate lowers the lifting capacity.

Warnings
Maximum temperature

Watch the temperature. Heating the magnet above 80 degrees Celsius will permanently weaken its properties and strength.

Choking Hazard

These products are not suitable for play. Swallowing multiple magnets can lead to them pinching intestinal walls, which poses a direct threat to life and necessitates immediate surgery.

Phone sensors

Be aware: rare earth magnets generate a field that interferes with sensitive sensors. Maintain a separation from your phone, tablet, and navigation systems.

Machining danger

Powder produced during machining of magnets is combustible. Avoid drilling into magnets unless you are an expert.

Avoid contact if allergic

Medical facts indicate that the nickel plating (standard magnet coating) is a common allergen. If your skin reacts to metals, avoid touching magnets with bare hands or select coated magnets.

Danger to pacemakers

Medical warning: Strong magnets can deactivate pacemakers and defibrillators. Do not approach if you have medical devices.

Serious injuries
