Advantages and disadvantages of Nd2Fe14B magnets.
Strengths
- They do not lose magnetism, even during nearly ten years – the reduction in lifting capacity is only ~1% (according to tests),
- Magnets perfectly resist against demagnetization caused by ambient magnetic noise,
- A magnet with a metallic silver surface has better aesthetics,
- Magnetic induction on the surface of the magnet is impressive,
- Neodymium magnets are characterized by extremely high magnetic induction on the magnet surface and can work (depending on the form) even at a temperature of 230°C or more...
- In view of the possibility of free molding and customization to custom projects, magnetic components can be modeled in a broad palette of shapes and sizes, which expands the range of possible applications,
- Key role in modern industrial fields – they find application in HDD drives, drive modules, precision medical tools, and multitasking production systems.
- Relatively small size with high pulling force – neodymium magnets offer high power in small dimensions, which enables their usage in compact constructions
Disadvantages
- To avoid cracks upon strong impacts, we suggest using special steel holders. Such a solution protects the magnet and simultaneously improves its durability.
- We warn that neodymium magnets can reduce their power at high temperatures. To prevent this, we recommend our specialized [AH] magnets, which work effectively even at 230°C.
- They oxidize in a humid environment - during use outdoors we recommend using waterproof magnets e.g. in rubber, plastic
- Due to limitations in producing nuts and complex forms in magnets, we recommend using a housing - magnetic holder.
- Health risk to health – tiny shards of magnets pose a threat, when accidentally swallowed, which gains importance in the aspect of protecting the youngest. Additionally, small elements of these products can disrupt the diagnostic process medical when they are in the body.
- High unit price – neodymium magnets have a higher price than other types of magnets (e.g. ferrite), which can limit application in large quantities
Lifting parameters
Detachment force of the magnet in optimal conditions – what affects it?
- using a plate made of high-permeability steel, acting as a ideal flux conductor
- whose transverse dimension reaches at least 10 mm
- characterized by lack of roughness
- without the slightest air gap between the magnet and steel
- during pulling in a direction perpendicular to the mounting surface
- at ambient temperature approx. 20 degrees Celsius
Magnet lifting force in use – key factors
- Space between surfaces – every millimeter of distance (caused e.g. by veneer or dirt) diminishes the magnet efficiency, often by half at just 0.5 mm.
- Force direction – declared lifting capacity refers to detachment vertically. When attempting to slide, the magnet exhibits significantly lower power (often approx. 20-30% of nominal force).
- Wall thickness – thin material does not allow full use of the magnet. Magnetic flux penetrates through instead of converting into lifting capacity.
- Material type – the best choice is high-permeability steel. Stainless steels may have worse magnetic properties.
- Surface condition – ground elements guarantee perfect abutment, which increases field saturation. Rough surfaces reduce efficiency.
- Temperature influence – high temperature weakens pulling force. Too high temperature can permanently damage the magnet.
Lifting capacity testing was conducted on plates with a smooth surface of suitable thickness, under perpendicular forces, whereas under parallel forces the lifting capacity is smaller. Moreover, even a small distance between the magnet and the plate decreases the holding force.
Precautions when working with neodymium magnets
Bodily injuries
Big blocks can break fingers instantly. Do not put your hand betwixt two attracting surfaces.
Metal Allergy
A percentage of the population have a contact allergy to nickel, which is the standard coating for NdFeB magnets. Frequent touching might lead to a rash. We suggest use protective gloves.
Thermal limits
Standard neodymium magnets (N-type) undergo demagnetization when the temperature goes above 80°C. Damage is permanent.
Safe distance
Very strong magnetic fields can destroy records on payment cards, hard drives, and other magnetic media. Stay away of min. 10 cm.
Handling rules
Before starting, check safety instructions. Uncontrolled attraction can destroy the magnet or hurt your hand. Think ahead.
Keep away from electronics
Remember: neodymium magnets generate a field that confuses precision electronics. Maintain a separation from your mobile, tablet, and GPS.
Machining danger
Mechanical processing of neodymium magnets poses a fire risk. Neodymium dust reacts violently with oxygen and is hard to extinguish.
Swallowing risk
Absolutely keep magnets away from children. Ingestion danger is significant, and the effects of magnets connecting inside the body are tragic.
Danger to pacemakers
Patients with a pacemaker have to keep an absolute distance from magnets. The magnetic field can interfere with the operation of the life-saving device.
Magnet fragility
NdFeB magnets are sintered ceramics, which means they are fragile like glass. Clashing of two magnets will cause them breaking into shards.
