Other offers
Pros as well as cons of neodymium magnets.
Strengths
- Their magnetic field remains stable, and after around 10 years it drops only by ~1% (according to research),
- Magnets perfectly defend themselves against loss of magnetization caused by ambient magnetic noise,
- Thanks to the shimmering finish, the plating of Ni-Cu-Ni, gold-plated, or silver gives an modern appearance,
- The surface of neodymium magnets generates a strong magnetic field – this is a distinguishing feature,
- Due to their durability and thermal resistance, neodymium magnets can operate (depending on the shape) even at high temperatures reaching 230°C or more...
- Possibility of individual shaping and adjusting to atypical needs,
- Key role in innovative solutions – they serve a role in magnetic memories, brushless drives, precision medical tools, as well as modern systems.
- Relatively small size with high pulling force – neodymium magnets offer strong magnetic field in compact dimensions, which makes them useful in small systems
Disadvantages
- Brittleness is one of their disadvantages. Upon intense impact they can fracture. We advise keeping them in a special holder, which not only secures them against impacts but also raises their durability
- Neodymium magnets decrease their strength under the influence of heating. As soon as 80°C is exceeded, many of them start losing their power. Therefore, we recommend our special magnets marked [AH], which maintain stability even at temperatures up to 230°C
- Due to the susceptibility of magnets to corrosion in a humid environment, we suggest using waterproof magnets made of rubber, plastic or other material stable to moisture, in case of application outdoors
- We suggest a housing - magnetic holder, due to difficulties in realizing nuts inside the magnet and complex forms.
- Health risk related to microscopic parts of magnets can be dangerous, in case of ingestion, which becomes key in the aspect of protecting the youngest. It is also worth noting that small elements of these products can complicate diagnosis medical in case of swallowing.
- Higher cost of purchase is a significant factor to consider compared to ceramic magnets, especially in budget applications
Lifting parameters
Magnetic strength at its maximum – what contributes to it?
- with the application of a sheet made of special test steel, ensuring maximum field concentration
- with a cross-section minimum 10 mm
- with an polished touching surface
- without the slightest insulating layer between the magnet and steel
- during detachment in a direction perpendicular to the mounting surface
- in neutral thermal conditions
Practical aspects of lifting capacity – factors
- Clearance – the presence of foreign body (rust, dirt, air) interrupts the magnetic circuit, which reduces capacity rapidly (even by 50% at 0.5 mm).
- Force direction – declared lifting capacity refers to pulling vertically. When applying parallel force, the magnet holds significantly lower power (typically approx. 20-30% of nominal force).
- Wall thickness – the thinner the sheet, the weaker the hold. Part of the magnetic field penetrates through instead of converting into lifting capacity.
- Metal type – not every steel reacts the same. High carbon content weaken the attraction effect.
- Surface condition – ground elements guarantee perfect abutment, which improves field saturation. Rough surfaces weaken the grip.
- Temperature – heating the magnet results in weakening of force. Check the maximum operating temperature for a given model.
Lifting capacity testing was conducted on a smooth plate of suitable thickness, under a perpendicular pulling force, whereas under shearing force the load capacity is reduced by as much as fivefold. In addition, even a slight gap between the magnet’s surface and the plate lowers the lifting capacity.
Precautions when working with neodymium magnets
Threat to electronics
Equipment safety: Neodymium magnets can ruin data carriers and sensitive devices (heart implants, hearing aids, timepieces).
Thermal limits
Watch the temperature. Exposing the magnet above 80 degrees Celsius will destroy its properties and pulling force.
Powerful field
Handle magnets consciously. Their powerful strength can shock even experienced users. Stay alert and respect their force.
Impact on smartphones
Remember: neodymium magnets produce a field that interferes with precision electronics. Keep a separation from your phone, device, and navigation systems.
Hand protection
Danger of trauma: The pulling power is so immense that it can cause hematomas, crushing, and broken bones. Protective gloves are recommended.
Keep away from children
NdFeB magnets are not toys. Accidental ingestion of several magnets can lead to them connecting inside the digestive tract, which poses a critical condition and requires immediate surgery.
Health Danger
Patients with a pacemaker should keep an large gap from magnets. The magnetic field can stop the functioning of the implant.
Nickel allergy
It is widely known that the nickel plating (the usual finish) is a common allergen. If your skin reacts to metals, avoid touching magnets with bare hands and select encased magnets.
Shattering risk
NdFeB magnets are sintered ceramics, meaning they are fragile like glass. Collision of two magnets leads to them shattering into small pieces.
Flammability
Dust generated during machining of magnets is combustible. Do not drill into magnets unless you are an expert.
