Other offers
Strengths and weaknesses of rare earth magnets.
Pros
- They have constant strength, and over nearly ten years their attraction force decreases symbolically – ~1% (in testing),
- They have excellent resistance to magnetism drop as a result of external magnetic sources,
- Thanks to the shimmering finish, the coating of nickel, gold, or silver gives an professional appearance,
- Magnetic induction on the working part of the magnet is extremely intense,
- Neodymium magnets are characterized by very high magnetic induction on the magnet surface and can work (depending on the form) even at a temperature of 230°C or more...
- In view of the option of free shaping and adaptation to individualized solutions, magnetic components can be produced in a broad palette of shapes and sizes, which expands the range of possible applications,
- Fundamental importance in modern technologies – they are used in magnetic memories, electric motors, precision medical tools, and multitasking production systems.
- Relatively small size with high pulling force – neodymium magnets offer strong magnetic field in small dimensions, which allows their use in small systems
Weaknesses
- At very strong impacts they can crack, therefore we advise placing them in special holders. A metal housing provides additional protection against damage and increases the magnet's durability.
- When exposed to high temperature, neodymium magnets experience a drop in power. Often, when the temperature exceeds 80°C, their power decreases (depending on the size, as well as shape of the magnet). For those who need magnets for extreme conditions, we offer [AH] versions withstanding up to 230°C
- Due to the susceptibility of magnets to corrosion in a humid environment, we suggest using waterproof magnets made of rubber, plastic or other material stable to moisture, in case of application outdoors
- Limited possibility of creating threads in the magnet and complex shapes - recommended is cover - magnetic holder.
- Potential hazard to health – tiny shards of magnets pose a threat, if swallowed, which gains importance in the aspect of protecting the youngest. It is also worth noting that small components of these magnets can disrupt the diagnostic process medical after entering the body.
- Higher cost of purchase is one of the disadvantages compared to ceramic magnets, especially in budget applications
Pull force analysis
Maximum lifting force for a neodymium magnet – what contributes to it?
- using a plate made of high-permeability steel, serving as a circuit closing element
- whose thickness reaches at least 10 mm
- with an polished contact surface
- without any insulating layer between the magnet and steel
- for force acting at a right angle (in the magnet axis)
- at conditions approx. 20°C
Practical aspects of lifting capacity – factors
- Space between surfaces – even a fraction of a millimeter of distance (caused e.g. by veneer or dirt) drastically reduces the magnet efficiency, often by half at just 0.5 mm.
- Force direction – declared lifting capacity refers to detachment vertically. When attempting to slide, the magnet exhibits much less (often approx. 20-30% of nominal force).
- Base massiveness – too thin sheet does not close the flux, causing part of the flux to be lost to the other side.
- Plate material – low-carbon steel gives the best results. Alloy steels decrease magnetic permeability and holding force.
- Smoothness – full contact is obtained only on polished steel. Any scratches and bumps reduce the real contact area, weakening the magnet.
- Temperature – temperature increase results in weakening of induction. It is worth remembering the maximum operating temperature for a given model.
Lifting capacity was assessed with the use of a smooth steel plate of optimal thickness (min. 20 mm), under perpendicular pulling force, whereas under shearing force the lifting capacity is smaller. Additionally, even a small distance between the magnet’s surface and the plate decreases the holding force.
Warnings
Swallowing risk
Only for adults. Small elements can be swallowed, leading to serious injuries. Store out of reach of children and animals.
Eye protection
Beware of splinters. Magnets can explode upon uncontrolled impact, launching shards into the air. Wear goggles.
Medical implants
For implant holders: Powerful magnets affect medical devices. Maintain at least 30 cm distance or ask another person to work with the magnets.
Precision electronics
An intense magnetic field disrupts the functioning of compasses in smartphones and GPS navigation. Keep magnets close to a device to avoid breaking the sensors.
Pinching danger
Pinching hazard: The attraction force is so great that it can result in blood blisters, pinching, and even bone fractures. Use thick gloves.
Keep away from computers
Avoid bringing magnets close to a wallet, laptop, or screen. The magnetism can destroy these devices and erase data from cards.
Mechanical processing
Mechanical processing of neodymium magnets poses a fire hazard. Magnetic powder oxidizes rapidly with oxygen and is hard to extinguish.
Powerful field
Exercise caution. Rare earth magnets act from a long distance and connect with massive power, often faster than you can react.
Power loss in heat
Regular neodymium magnets (grade N) undergo demagnetization when the temperature surpasses 80°C. The loss of strength is permanent.
Avoid contact if allergic
Warning for allergy sufferers: The nickel-copper-nickel coating consists of nickel. If skin irritation appears, immediately stop working with magnets and wear gloves.
