Pros and cons of neodymium magnets.
Strengths
- They retain attractive force for almost 10 years – the drop is just ~1% (according to analyses),
- They are noted for resistance to demagnetization induced by external field influence,
- In other words, due to the glossy layer of silver, the element gains visual value,
- Neodymium magnets create maximum magnetic induction on a contact point, which allows for strong attraction,
- Due to their durability and thermal resistance, neodymium magnets are capable of operate (depending on the form) even at high temperatures reaching 230°C or more...
- Thanks to the ability of free shaping and customization to specialized solutions, neodymium magnets can be produced in a broad palette of geometric configurations, which increases their versatility,
- Significant place in modern technologies – they find application in HDD drives, brushless drives, advanced medical instruments, and industrial machines.
- Relatively small size with high pulling force – neodymium magnets offer high power in compact dimensions, which enables their usage in compact constructions
Cons
- To avoid cracks upon strong impacts, we suggest using special steel housings. Such a solution secures the magnet and simultaneously improves its durability.
- We warn that neodymium magnets can lose their strength at high temperatures. To prevent this, we advise our specialized [AH] magnets, which work effectively even at 230°C.
- Due to the susceptibility of magnets to corrosion in a humid environment, we suggest using waterproof magnets made of rubber, plastic or other material resistant to moisture, when using outdoors
- We recommend casing - magnetic mechanism, due to difficulties in producing threads inside the magnet and complex shapes.
- Health risk related to microscopic parts of magnets pose a threat, if swallowed, which is particularly important in the aspect of protecting the youngest. Furthermore, small components of these products are able to be problematic in diagnostics medical after entering the body.
- High unit price – neodymium magnets cost more than other types of magnets (e.g. ferrite), which can limit application in large quantities
Lifting parameters
Breakaway strength of the magnet in ideal conditions – what it depends on?
- on a base made of mild steel, effectively closing the magnetic flux
- possessing a thickness of min. 10 mm to ensure full flux closure
- with an ideally smooth touching surface
- with total lack of distance (without coatings)
- under perpendicular force direction (90-degree angle)
- at ambient temperature approx. 20 degrees Celsius
Lifting capacity in practice – influencing factors
- Gap (between the magnet and the plate), because even a tiny clearance (e.g. 0.5 mm) leads to a decrease in force by up to 50% (this also applies to paint, rust or dirt).
- Pull-off angle – remember that the magnet holds strongest perpendicularly. Under shear forces, the capacity drops drastically, often to levels of 20-30% of the nominal value.
- Steel thickness – too thin plate does not accept the full field, causing part of the flux to be escaped to the other side.
- Steel grade – ideal substrate is high-permeability steel. Cast iron may attract less.
- Surface structure – the more even the plate, the better the adhesion and higher the lifting capacity. Roughness acts like micro-gaps.
- Thermal environment – temperature increase causes a temporary drop of induction. It is worth remembering the maximum operating temperature for a given model.
Holding force was measured on the plate surface of 20 mm thickness, when a perpendicular force was applied, in contrast under shearing force the holding force is lower. Additionally, even a small distance between the magnet’s surface and the plate lowers the holding force.
Precautions when working with neodymium magnets
Phone sensors
Navigation devices and smartphones are extremely susceptible to magnetic fields. Close proximity with a powerful NdFeB magnet can permanently damage the sensors in your phone.
Health Danger
Medical warning: Neodymium magnets can turn off heart devices and defibrillators. Stay away if you have medical devices.
Danger to the youngest
NdFeB magnets are not toys. Accidental ingestion of a few magnets may result in them connecting inside the digestive tract, which poses a severe health hazard and requires urgent medical intervention.
Serious injuries
Big blocks can break fingers instantly. Do not place your hand betwixt two attracting surfaces.
Mechanical processing
Machining of neodymium magnets carries a risk of fire risk. Neodymium dust oxidizes rapidly with oxygen and is difficult to extinguish.
Safe operation
Before use, check safety instructions. Uncontrolled attraction can destroy the magnet or hurt your hand. Be predictive.
Protect data
Device Safety: Neodymium magnets can damage payment cards and sensitive devices (pacemakers, medical aids, timepieces).
Do not overheat magnets
Monitor thermal conditions. Heating the magnet above 80 degrees Celsius will destroy its magnetic structure and pulling force.
Risk of cracking
Watch out for shards. Magnets can fracture upon uncontrolled impact, launching shards into the air. We recommend safety glasses.
Allergy Warning
Studies show that the nickel plating (the usual finish) is a strong allergen. If you have an allergy, prevent direct skin contact or opt for coated magnets.
