Strengths and weaknesses of Nd2Fe14B magnets.
Strengths
- They do not lose power, even after nearly ten years – the decrease in lifting capacity is only ~1% (theoretically),
- They feature excellent resistance to magnetism drop as a result of external fields,
- By using a shiny coating of nickel, the element presents an proper look,
- Neodymium magnets achieve maximum magnetic induction on a small surface, which increases force concentration,
- Neodymium magnets are characterized by very high magnetic induction on the magnet surface and can work (depending on the shape) even at a temperature of 230°C or more...
- Thanks to versatility in shaping and the capacity to customize to unusual requirements,
- Significant place in high-tech industry – they are utilized in hard drives, motor assemblies, medical equipment, and industrial machines.
- Thanks to their power density, small magnets offer high operating force, in miniature format,
Disadvantages
- At strong impacts they can crack, therefore we advise placing them in special holders. A metal housing provides additional protection against damage and increases the magnet's durability.
- Neodymium magnets lose their power under the influence of heating. As soon as 80°C is exceeded, many of them start losing their force. Therefore, we recommend our special magnets marked [AH], which maintain stability even at temperatures up to 230°C
- When exposed to humidity, magnets usually rust. For applications outside, it is recommended to use protective magnets, such as magnets in rubber or plastics, which secure oxidation as well as corrosion.
- Due to limitations in realizing threads and complicated shapes in magnets, we propose using a housing - magnetic mechanism.
- Potential hazard resulting from small fragments of magnets can be dangerous, when accidentally swallowed, which is particularly important in the context of child health protection. It is also worth noting that tiny parts of these devices can complicate diagnosis medical in case of swallowing.
- With budget limitations the cost of neodymium magnets is a challenge,
Holding force characteristics
Optimal lifting capacity of a neodymium magnet – what it depends on?
- on a base made of structural steel, perfectly concentrating the magnetic field
- possessing a massiveness of at least 10 mm to avoid saturation
- with an ideally smooth contact surface
- with direct contact (no paint)
- under axial force vector (90-degree angle)
- at temperature room level
Impact of factors on magnetic holding capacity in practice
- Clearance – existence of any layer (rust, tape, air) interrupts the magnetic circuit, which lowers power steeply (even by 50% at 0.5 mm).
- Load vector – highest force is obtained only during perpendicular pulling. The resistance to sliding of the magnet along the surface is usually several times lower (approx. 1/5 of the lifting capacity).
- Plate thickness – insufficiently thick steel does not close the flux, causing part of the power to be escaped into the air.
- Metal type – not every steel attracts identically. Alloy additives weaken the attraction effect.
- Smoothness – full contact is obtained only on polished steel. Rough texture create air cushions, weakening the magnet.
- Temperature – temperature increase results in weakening of induction. Check the thermal limit for a given model.
Lifting capacity was measured with the use of a smooth steel plate of optimal thickness (min. 20 mm), under perpendicular detachment force, in contrast under attempts to slide the magnet the lifting capacity is smaller. Additionally, even a slight gap between the magnet and the plate reduces the load capacity.
H&S for magnets
Magnetic interference
Be aware: neodymium magnets produce a field that disrupts precision electronics. Maintain a separation from your mobile, tablet, and GPS.
Magnet fragility
Despite the nickel coating, the material is delicate and not impact-resistant. Do not hit, as the magnet may crumble into hazardous fragments.
Fire warning
Dust produced during cutting of magnets is self-igniting. Do not drill into magnets unless you are an expert.
Conscious usage
Before use, read the rules. Uncontrolled attraction can destroy the magnet or injure your hand. Be predictive.
Adults only
Always keep magnets out of reach of children. Risk of swallowing is high, and the consequences of magnets connecting inside the body are tragic.
Pinching danger
Pinching hazard: The attraction force is so great that it can cause hematomas, pinching, and broken bones. Protective gloves are recommended.
Threat to electronics
Data protection: Strong magnets can damage data carriers and delicate electronics (heart implants, hearing aids, timepieces).
Avoid contact if allergic
Some people experience a contact allergy to nickel, which is the standard coating for neodymium magnets. Prolonged contact may cause an allergic reaction. We strongly advise wear safety gloves.
Operating temperature
Do not overheat. NdFeB magnets are susceptible to temperature. If you need operation above 80°C, inquire about HT versions (H, SH, UH).
Warning for heart patients
For implant holders: Powerful magnets disrupt electronics. Keep at least 30 cm distance or ask another person to work with the magnets.
