Advantages as well as disadvantages of Nd2Fe14B magnets.
Benefits
- They have unchanged lifting capacity, and over more than ten years their attraction force decreases symbolically – ~1% (in testing),
- They retain their magnetic properties even under external field action,
- Thanks to the shimmering finish, the plating of Ni-Cu-Ni, gold-plated, or silver gives an modern appearance,
- Magnets possess maximum magnetic induction on the active area,
- Made from properly selected components, these magnets show impressive resistance to high heat, enabling them to function (depending on their form) at temperatures up to 230°C and above...
- Due to the possibility of free shaping and customization to specialized solutions, neodymium magnets can be produced in a wide range of shapes and sizes, which expands the range of possible applications,
- Universal use in modern technologies – they serve a role in hard drives, electromotive mechanisms, diagnostic systems, also complex engineering applications.
- Thanks to concentrated force, small magnets offer high operating force, occupying minimum space,
Cons
- Susceptibility to cracking is one of their disadvantages. Upon intense impact they can fracture. We advise keeping them in a steel housing, which not only secures them against impacts but also raises their durability
- Neodymium magnets decrease their force under the influence of heating. As soon as 80°C is exceeded, many of them start losing their power. Therefore, we recommend our special magnets marked [AH], which maintain durability even at temperatures up to 230°C
- Due to the susceptibility of magnets to corrosion in a humid environment, we recommend using waterproof magnets made of rubber, plastic or other material stable to moisture, in case of application outdoors
- Due to limitations in creating nuts and complicated forms in magnets, we propose using a housing - magnetic mount.
- Health risk to health – tiny shards of magnets are risky, if swallowed, which gains importance in the context of child safety. Additionally, tiny parts of these products can be problematic in diagnostics medical in case of swallowing.
- High unit price – neodymium magnets cost more than other types of magnets (e.g. ferrite), which increases costs of application in large quantities
Pull force analysis
Optimal lifting capacity of a neodymium magnet – what contributes to it?
- using a sheet made of mild steel, functioning as a circuit closing element
- possessing a thickness of min. 10 mm to ensure full flux closure
- with a surface free of scratches
- under conditions of gap-free contact (surface-to-surface)
- for force applied at a right angle (pull-off, not shear)
- at room temperature
Practical lifting capacity: influencing factors
- Space between surfaces – every millimeter of separation (caused e.g. by veneer or dirt) significantly weakens the pulling force, often by half at just 0.5 mm.
- Loading method – declared lifting capacity refers to detachment vertically. When attempting to slide, the magnet exhibits much less (often approx. 20-30% of nominal force).
- Metal thickness – thin material does not allow full use of the magnet. Magnetic flux penetrates through instead of generating force.
- Material composition – different alloys reacts the same. Alloy additives weaken the attraction effect.
- Plate texture – smooth surfaces ensure maximum contact, which increases field saturation. Rough surfaces weaken the grip.
- Operating temperature – NdFeB sinters have a negative temperature coefficient. At higher temperatures they are weaker, and at low temperatures gain strength (up to a certain limit).
Lifting capacity testing was performed on a smooth plate of suitable thickness, under perpendicular forces, whereas under shearing force the holding force is lower. In addition, even a small distance between the magnet and the plate lowers the lifting capacity.
Precautions when working with NdFeB magnets
Precision electronics
GPS units and smartphones are extremely sensitive to magnetism. Close proximity with a powerful NdFeB magnet can decalibrate the internal compass in your phone.
Sensitization to coating
Studies show that nickel (the usual finish) is a common allergen. For allergy sufferers, prevent touching magnets with bare hands and choose encased magnets.
Flammability
Dust generated during cutting of magnets is combustible. Avoid drilling into magnets unless you are an expert.
Medical implants
Health Alert: Neodymium magnets can deactivate heart devices and defibrillators. Stay away if you have medical devices.
Thermal limits
Standard neodymium magnets (grade N) undergo demagnetization when the temperature surpasses 80°C. This process is irreversible.
Safe operation
Exercise caution. Rare earth magnets act from a distance and connect with massive power, often faster than you can move away.
Bone fractures
Pinching hazard: The attraction force is so immense that it can result in blood blisters, crushing, and broken bones. Use thick gloves.
Keep away from computers
Do not bring magnets near a wallet, computer, or screen. The magnetism can irreversibly ruin these devices and wipe information from cards.
Product not for children
Product intended for adults. Tiny parts can be swallowed, leading to intestinal necrosis. Keep away from kids and pets.
Shattering risk
Protect your eyes. Magnets can explode upon uncontrolled impact, launching sharp fragments into the air. We recommend safety glasses.
