Pros as well as cons of neodymium magnets.
Benefits
- They do not lose power, even during nearly ten years – the decrease in lifting capacity is only ~1% (according to tests),
- Neodymium magnets are distinguished by extremely resistant to magnetic field loss caused by external magnetic fields,
- In other words, due to the smooth layer of gold, the element gains a professional look,
- Neodymium magnets generate maximum magnetic induction on a their surface, which allows for strong attraction,
- Through (appropriate) combination of ingredients, they can achieve high thermal strength, allowing for action at temperatures reaching 230°C and above...
- Due to the possibility of flexible molding and customization to specialized solutions, NdFeB magnets can be produced in a variety of geometric configurations, which expands the range of possible applications,
- Fundamental importance in future technologies – they find application in computer drives, drive modules, advanced medical instruments, and modern systems.
- Thanks to their power density, small magnets offer high operating force, in miniature format,
Cons
- Susceptibility to cracking is one of their disadvantages. Upon intense impact they can break. We recommend keeping them in a strong case, which not only secures them against impacts but also raises their durability
- We warn that neodymium magnets can lose their power at high temperatures. To prevent this, we recommend our specialized [AH] magnets, which work effectively even at 230°C.
- Due to the susceptibility of magnets to corrosion in a humid environment, we suggest using waterproof magnets made of rubber, plastic or other material stable to moisture, in case of application outdoors
- Limited possibility of creating threads in the magnet and complex shapes - preferred is cover - mounting mechanism.
- Health risk resulting from small fragments of magnets pose a threat, when accidentally swallowed, which gains importance in the aspect of protecting the youngest. It is also worth noting that small components of these devices are able to be problematic in diagnostics medical after entering the body.
- Higher cost of purchase is a significant factor to consider compared to ceramic magnets, especially in budget applications
Holding force characteristics
Detachment force of the magnet in optimal conditions – what it depends on?
- with the application of a yoke made of low-carbon steel, guaranteeing maximum field concentration
- whose transverse dimension is min. 10 mm
- with a plane cleaned and smooth
- with direct contact (without impurities)
- for force applied at a right angle (pull-off, not shear)
- at ambient temperature room level
Lifting capacity in practice – influencing factors
- Distance – existence of any layer (rust, dirt, gap) acts as an insulator, which lowers power rapidly (even by 50% at 0.5 mm).
- Pull-off angle – remember that the magnet has greatest strength perpendicularly. Under sliding down, the capacity drops significantly, often to levels of 20-30% of the maximum value.
- Wall thickness – the thinner the sheet, the weaker the hold. Part of the magnetic field penetrates through instead of generating force.
- Plate material – low-carbon steel gives the best results. Alloy steels decrease magnetic properties and holding force.
- Base smoothness – the smoother and more polished the plate, the larger the contact zone and higher the lifting capacity. Roughness creates an air distance.
- Thermal conditions – NdFeB sinters have a sensitivity to temperature. When it is hot they are weaker, and in frost they can be stronger (up to a certain limit).
Lifting capacity was assessed with the use of a smooth steel plate of suitable thickness (min. 20 mm), under perpendicular pulling force, whereas under shearing force the lifting capacity is smaller. Moreover, even a slight gap between the magnet’s surface and the plate decreases the load capacity.
Safe handling of neodymium magnets
GPS Danger
Navigation devices and mobile phones are extremely susceptible to magnetism. Close proximity with a strong magnet can decalibrate the sensors in your phone.
Cards and drives
Do not bring magnets near a purse, computer, or TV. The magnetic field can irreversibly ruin these devices and wipe information from cards.
Eye protection
Protect your eyes. Magnets can fracture upon violent connection, launching shards into the air. We recommend safety glasses.
Implant safety
Patients with a pacemaker must keep an absolute distance from magnets. The magnetism can disrupt the operation of the life-saving device.
Flammability
Powder produced during machining of magnets is self-igniting. Avoid drilling into magnets unless you are an expert.
Metal Allergy
Allergy Notice: The nickel-copper-nickel coating consists of nickel. If an allergic reaction appears, immediately stop handling magnets and wear gloves.
Operating temperature
Monitor thermal conditions. Heating the magnet to high heat will ruin its properties and strength.
Keep away from children
Absolutely keep magnets away from children. Risk of swallowing is high, and the effects of magnets clamping inside the body are very dangerous.
Immense force
Before starting, read the rules. Uncontrolled attraction can break the magnet or hurt your hand. Think ahead.
Finger safety
Big blocks can break fingers in a fraction of a second. Do not put your hand betwixt two attracting surfaces.
