Advantages and disadvantages of neodymium magnets.
Pros
- They virtually do not lose power, because even after 10 years the performance loss is only ~1% (based on calculations),
- They are resistant to demagnetization induced by presence of other magnetic fields,
- A magnet with a shiny nickel surface has better aesthetics,
- Neodymium magnets deliver maximum magnetic induction on a small surface, which increases force concentration,
- Neodymium magnets are characterized by very high magnetic induction on the magnet surface and can function (depending on the form) even at a temperature of 230°C or more...
- Thanks to the ability of free molding and adaptation to specialized solutions, magnetic components can be produced in a wide range of forms and dimensions, which expands the range of possible applications,
- Key role in modern technologies – they are commonly used in HDD drives, electric drive systems, medical devices, also modern systems.
- Relatively small size with high pulling force – neodymium magnets offer impressive pulling force in tiny dimensions, which allows their use in miniature devices
Cons
- To avoid cracks under impact, we recommend using special steel housings. Such a solution secures the magnet and simultaneously increases its durability.
- When exposed to high temperature, neodymium magnets experience a drop in force. Often, when the temperature exceeds 80°C, their strength decreases (depending on the size, as well as shape of the magnet). For those who need magnets for extreme conditions, we offer [AH] versions withstanding up to 230°C
- When exposed to humidity, magnets usually rust. For applications outside, it is recommended to use protective magnets, such as those in rubber or plastics, which prevent oxidation and corrosion.
- Limited possibility of producing threads in the magnet and complex shapes - recommended is casing - magnetic holder.
- Potential hazard resulting from small fragments of magnets are risky, if swallowed, which gains importance in the context of child health protection. It is also worth noting that small components of these magnets are able to disrupt the diagnostic process medical after entering the body.
- Higher cost of purchase is one of the disadvantages compared to ceramic magnets, especially in budget applications
Lifting parameters
Maximum lifting capacity of the magnet – what affects it?
- on a base made of mild steel, optimally conducting the magnetic flux
- possessing a thickness of min. 10 mm to avoid saturation
- characterized by lack of roughness
- with total lack of distance (no coatings)
- for force applied at a right angle (in the magnet axis)
- at temperature approx. 20 degrees Celsius
Lifting capacity in real conditions – factors
- Gap between magnet and steel – every millimeter of separation (caused e.g. by varnish or unevenness) significantly weakens the pulling force, often by half at just 0.5 mm.
- Force direction – catalog parameter refers to detachment vertically. When attempting to slide, the magnet holds much less (typically approx. 20-30% of maximum force).
- Base massiveness – insufficiently thick plate does not close the flux, causing part of the power to be lost to the other side.
- Steel grade – ideal substrate is high-permeability steel. Stainless steels may attract less.
- Plate texture – smooth surfaces guarantee perfect abutment, which increases force. Uneven metal reduce efficiency.
- Thermal environment – temperature increase causes a temporary drop of force. Check the thermal limit for a given model.
Lifting capacity was assessed by applying a smooth steel plate of suitable thickness (min. 20 mm), under perpendicular pulling force, however under attempts to slide the magnet the lifting capacity is smaller. Moreover, even a small distance between the magnet’s surface and the plate reduces the lifting capacity.
Safety rules for work with neodymium magnets
Caution required
Before use, read the rules. Sudden snapping can break the magnet or injure your hand. Be predictive.
Skin irritation risks
A percentage of the population experience a contact allergy to Ni, which is the typical protective layer for neodymium magnets. Extended handling might lead to dermatitis. We strongly advise wear safety gloves.
Bone fractures
Large magnets can smash fingers instantly. Never place your hand betwixt two attracting surfaces.
Threat to electronics
Equipment safety: Strong magnets can ruin payment cards and delicate electronics (heart implants, hearing aids, mechanical watches).
Medical implants
Life threat: Neodymium magnets can turn off heart devices and defibrillators. Do not approach if you have electronic implants.
Precision electronics
Remember: neodymium magnets generate a field that disrupts sensitive sensors. Keep a safe distance from your phone, device, and navigation systems.
Fire warning
Combustion risk: Rare earth powder is highly flammable. Do not process magnets without safety gear as this risks ignition.
Product not for children
Neodymium magnets are not suitable for play. Accidental ingestion of multiple magnets can lead to them connecting inside the digestive tract, which poses a critical condition and requires immediate surgery.
Do not overheat magnets
Regular neodymium magnets (N-type) lose magnetization when the temperature surpasses 80°C. Damage is permanent.
Magnet fragility
Despite metallic appearance, the material is delicate and cannot withstand shocks. Avoid impacts, as the magnet may shatter into hazardous fragments.
