Shopping tips

Neodymium magnetic mounts featuring internal thread are universal tools, used across manufacturing and everyday uses, e.g. in automotive. They contain a magnetic core, usually neodymium, enclosed in a metal shell, coated with zinc for corrosion protection. The internal thread, available in sizes from M4 to M8, enables mounting bolts, which facilitates installation of different components, like nameplates, instruments, or lamps. They work thanks to a strong magnetic field, that focuses in the contact area, providing holding force from 1.3 kg to 60 kg, based on mounting dimensions. They are especially useful in the automotive industry, e.g. for attaching car body components, and also in advertising, for hanging banners. Some models have a rubber coating, e.g. in black or yellow, helping prevent surface damage and improves moisture resistance. Advantages cover great strength, ease of installation thanks to the thread, as well as the option to move massive steel components. However, the grip strength relies on surface thickness, type of steel, and the gap between holder and object. Preventing mechanical shocks is crucial, since neodymium magnets are fragile, and over-tightening the bolt can cause damage. Moreover, a strong magnetic field may affect electronic devices, like phones or data carriers, therefore mounts should be stored away from those devices. Choosing mounts from trusted suppliers is advised, to ensure high quality and safe use during operation.

Advantages and disadvantages of neodymium magnets NdFeB.

Apart from immense power, neodymium magnets have the following advantages:

  • They do not lose their power (of the magnet). After about 10 years, their power decreases by only ~1% (theoretically),
  • They are exceptionally resistant to demagnetization caused by an external magnetic field,
  • By applying a shiny coating of nickel, gold, or silver, the element gains an aesthetic appearance,
  • They have exceptionally high magnetic induction on the surface of the magnet,
  • Thanks to their high temperature resistance, they can operate (depending on the form) even at temperatures up to 230°C and above...
  • Due to the option of accurate forming or adaptation to individual needs – neodymium magnets can be produced in a wide range of shapes and sizes, which expands the range of their possible uses.
  • Significant importance in the industry of new technologies – find application in hard drives, electric motors, medical devices and very highly developed apparatuses.

Disadvantages of neodymium magnets:

  • They are fragile when subjected to a strong impact. If the magnets are exposed to impacts, we recommend using magnets in a steel housing. The steel housing in the form of a holder protects the magnet from impacts and at the same time increases its overall strength,
  • They lose power at high temperatures. Most neodymium magnets experience permanent loss of strength when heated above 80°C (depending on the form and height). However, we also offer special magnets with high temperature resistance, up to 230°C,
  • They rust in a humid environment. For outdoor use, we recommend using waterproof magnets, such as those made of rubber or plastic,
  • The use of a cover - a magnetic holder is recommended due to the limited production capabilities of creating threads or complex shapes in the magnet
  • Possible danger arising from small pieces of magnets pose a threat, if swallowed, which is particularly important in the context of child safety. It's also worth noting that tiny parts of these products are able to hinder the diagnostic process when they are in the body.

Exercise Caution with Neodymium Magnets

Neodymium magnets are not recommended for people with pacemakers.

Neodymium magnets produce strong magnetic fields that can interfere with the operation of a heart pacemaker. However, if the magnetic field does not affect the device, it can damage its components or deactivate the device when it is in a magnetic field.

It is crucial not to allow the magnets to pinch together uncontrollably or place your fingers in their path as they attract to each other.

Magnets will bounce and touch together within a distance of several to around 10 cm from each other.

Do not give neodymium magnets to youngest children.

Remember that neodymium magnets are not toys. Do not allow children to play with them. They can be a significant choking hazard. If multiple magnets are swallowed, they can attract to each other through the intestinal walls, causing severe injuries, and even death.

Neodymium magnetic are highly delicate, they easily fall apart and can become damaged.

Magnets made of neodymium are highly delicate, and by joining them in an uncontrolled manner, they will break. Neodymium magnets are made of metal and coated with a shiny nickel surface, but they are not as hard as steel. At the moment of collision between the magnets, sharp metal fragments can be dispersed in different directions.

Keep neodymium magnets as far away as possible from GPS and smartphones.

Magnetic fields can interfere with compasses and magnetometers used in aviation and maritime navigation, as well as internal compasses of smartphones and GPS devices. There are neodymium magnets in every smartphone, for example, in the microphone and speakers.

Keep neodymium magnets away from the wallet, computer, and TV.

Strong magnetic fields emitted by neodymium magnets can damage magnetic storage media such as floppy disks, credit cards, magnetic ID cards, cassette tapes, video tapes, or other devices. They can also damage televisions, VCRs, computer monitors, and CRT displays. Avoid placing neodymium magnets in close proximity to electronic devices.

Dust and powder from neodymium magnets are flammable.

Do not attempt to drill into neodymium magnets. Mechanical processing is also not recommended. Once crushed into fine powder or dust, this material becomes highly flammable.

Neodymium magnets can become demagnetized at high temperatures.

Whilst Neodymium magnets can demagnetize at high temperatures, it's important to note that the extent of this effect can vary based on factors such as the magnet's material, shape, and intended application.

Comparing neodymium magnets to ferrite magnets (found in speakers), they are 10 times more powerful, and their power can surprise you.

Please review the information on how to handle neodymium magnets and avoid significant harm to your body, as well as prevent unintentional damage to the magnets.

Avoid contact with neodymium magnets if you have a nickel allergy.

Studies clearly indicate a small percentage of people who suffer from metal allergies such as nickel. An allergic reaction often manifests as skin redness and rash. If you have a nickel allergy, try wearing gloves or avoid direct contact with nickel-plated neodymium magnets.

Warning!

In order for you to know how powerful neodymium magnets are and why they are so dangerous, see the article - Dangerous powerful neodymium magnets.
