How strong a magnet do I need for magnet fishing?
Our search magnets are rated between 32 kg and 680 kg of pull force. The rating is measured as a straight, perpendicular pull on thick, clean steel — in a river you almost never pull that way, so treat it as a figure for comparing models rather than a promise. For a first magnet, mid-range models around 300 kg are easier to handle than the heaviest ones, which are simply hard to lift once they grab a submerged object.
What rope and shackle should I pair with the magnet?
Match the whole chain, not just the magnet. Our ø10 mm rope is rated at 1592 kg and the M10 shackle at 320 kg, so with a 310 kg magnet the shackle is the limiting part. Whatever you buy, check the rating of every component separately and take the lowest one as the rating of the set. The knot at the eye is usually weaker than the rope itself.
What is the difference between a single-sided and a double-sided fishing magnet?
A single-sided magnet holds on one face only, so it has to land the right way round. A double-sided one grabs from either face, which matters when you throw it into moving water and cannot control how it lands. The trade-off is weight and price for the same nominal pull force — the F200 GOLD DUAL, for instance, is rated at 601 kg against 310 kg for the single-sided F200 GOLD.
Does the pull force rating apply underwater?
Water itself is not the problem — it is not magnetic and barely changes the force. What changes it is everything else: silt and rust between the magnet and the find, a curved or thin surface instead of a flat plate, and a pull that comes at an angle rather than straight off. Expect a fraction of the catalogue figure in real conditions, and choose the mounting point and coating with that in mind.

The best choice are magnets in thick, chrome-plated housings dedicated to water applications. This specific magnet ensures a laboratory lifting capacity of up to 230.00 kg, which translates into high effectiveness in water. Cons

Disadvantages of neodymium magnets:
  • At very strong impacts they can crack, therefore we recommend placing them in steel cases. A metal housing provides additional protection against damage, as well as increases the magnet's durability.
  • NdFeB magnets lose power when exposed to high temperatures. After reaching 80°C, many of them experience permanent weakening of strength (a factor is the shape and dimensions of the magnet). We offer magnets specially adapted to work at temperatures up to 230°C marked [AH], which are extremely resistant to heat
  • Magnets exposed to a humid environment can corrode. Therefore while using outdoors, we advise using waterproof magnets made of rubber, plastic or other material resistant to moisture

Pull force analysis

Best holding force of the magnet in ideal parameterswhat it depends on?

Breakaway force is the result of a measurement for the most favorable conditions, taking into account:
  • with the contact of a sheet made of special test steel, guaranteeing maximum field concentration
  • possessing a massiveness of minimum 10 mm to avoid saturation
  • characterized by even structure
  • with zero gap (no impurities)
  • for force acting at a right angle (pull-off, not shear)
  • at ambient temperature room level

Lifting capacity in practice – influencing factors

During everyday use, the actual holding force depends on several key aspects, presented from crucial:
  • Distance – the presence of foreign body (paint, tape, air) interrupts the magnetic circuit, which lowers power steeply (even by 50% at 0.5 mm).
  • Angle of force application – highest force is obtained only during pulling at a 90° angle. The force required to slide of the magnet along the surface is typically several times lower (approx. 1/5 of the lifting capacity).
  • Substrate thickness – for full efficiency, the steel must be sufficiently thick. Paper-thin metal restricts the attraction force (the magnet "punches through" it).
  • Steel type – mild steel gives the best results. Higher carbon content reduce magnetic properties and holding force.
  • Surface condition – ground elements ensure maximum contact, which increases field saturation. Uneven metal reduce efficiency.
  • Temperature – heating the magnet causes a temporary drop of induction. It is worth remembering the maximum operating temperature for a given model.

Lifting capacity was assessed with the use of a smooth steel plate of optimal thickness (min. 20 mm), under perpendicular pulling force, whereas under parallel forces the load capacity is reduced by as much as fivefold. Additionally, even a small distance between the magnet’s surface and the plate reduces the holding force.

Precautions when working with neodymium magnets
Electronic hazard

Powerful magnetic fields can erase data on payment cards, HDDs, and storage devices. Maintain a gap of at least 10 cm.

Flammability

Mechanical processing of neodymium magnets carries a risk of fire hazard. Neodymium dust reacts violently with oxygen and is difficult to extinguish.

Respect the power

Before starting, read the rules. Uncontrolled attraction can destroy the magnet or injure your hand. Be predictive.

Hand protection

Big blocks can smash fingers in a fraction of a second. Do not put your hand between two strong magnets.

Precision electronics

A strong magnetic field disrupts the functioning of compasses in smartphones and navigation systems. Do not bring magnets close to a device to avoid breaking the sensors.

Adults only

Product intended for adults. Tiny parts can be swallowed, leading to serious injuries. Store away from kids and pets.

Shattering risk
