Magnetic separators over conveyor belts

How to choose and mount a magnetic beam above a belt

A magnetic beam can be mounted above a conveyor to capture ferrous contaminants from the moving material. DHIT's catalogue includes beams of different lengths and mounting patterns, including 4xM8 models. Compare the dimensions of each product with the belt and ask for a process review when the flow or mounting space is unusual.

The selection problem

A metal fragment that remains in the product stream can reach downstream machinery. On a belt, the material may form an uneven layer, so the distance from a contaminant to the beam varies across the flow.

Surface field strength alone cannot predict the result at the working distance. Record the belt width, maximum material depth and available clearance before choosing a product.

Beam above the belt or insert at the discharge point?

Magnetic beam: consider it when the material stays on the belt and the unit can cover the working width. Compare the available beam dimensions and mounting points in the product cards.

Rod insert: if the material drops into a chute, it may be possible to locate a rod at that point instead. The best position depends on the actual flow and access for cleaning. A grid requires material to pass between its bars; it is not a drop-in replacement for a beam suspended over a belt.

What to provide for a selection review

The main inputs are the belt and process conditions:

Selection input What to provide Why it matters
Belt width Working width in mm The selected beam must cover the intended material path.
Material depth Maximum layer depth in mm This affects the working gap and required mounting clearance.
Contamination Material and representative particle sizes Use a site test to assess capture at the actual distance and flow.
Process conditions Temperature, moisture and cleaning access Check product suitability and a safe maintenance method.

The mounting height sets the working gap between material and beam. Confirm that the selected product clears the highest material layer and can be inspected and cleaned safely. Test performance with representative contamination after installation.

Mounting and maintenance

Mount the beam to a suitable support above the conveyor, with clearance for the material and access for cleaning. Follow the mounting pattern and dimensions of the selected product card. The final position should be checked during commissioning.

Captured contamination must be removed safely. Set an inspection and cleaning interval from operating experience. Check the exact product's allowed process temperature rather than assuming that all magnetic beams have the same limit.

Frequently asked questions

That depends on particle properties, layer depth, distance from the beam and the chosen product. Test the proposed installation with representative contamination before relying on it.

Leave enough clearance for the maximum material layer and safe operation, then assess the actual working gap. The final height should be set during commissioning and tested in the process.

A passive magnetic beam needs no electrical supply, but continuous-duty suitability depends on the selected product, process conditions and cleaning access. Check its specifications before installation.

The contamination load determines the interval. Inspect the working surface after commissioning and document a safe cleaning schedule based on observed build-up.

Ask DHIT which measurements and documents are available for the selected unit. HACCP and ATEX requirements must be assessed for the full installation, not inferred from a product description.

Often, but the support and clearance must be checked. Provide the belt width, material depth and available mounting space so the product can be assessed for the actual line.

That depends on the dimensions and installation. If the belt discharges into a chute, compare both arrangements for the actual process; do not choose on price alone.
