What forms can magnets take: a guide to their various shapes?

|

The action of a magnet often depends on its shape, and most importantly, its mode and sometimes operating temperature – not every magnet will attract as strongly as another. not all materials allow for shaping into any form. ferrite models usually offer the greatest freedom in shape, with neodymium models being somewhat less versatile. in this text, we present the most popular shapes of magnets along with their brief characteristics.

Cylindrical magnets – large magnetic field range

Cylindrical magnets resemble a very flat or elongated cylinder. due to their strongest attraction force among all, they are most commonly found in industry and various devices such as motors, turbines, or meters.

Ring magnets – easy to mount in many places

Similar to cylindrical ones, but they have a small hole in the middle allowing for threading a wire or mounting a screw. due to their convenience in use, they are especially common in cabinets, holders, as well as in speakers and homes.

Plate magnets – versatility of use across various industries

They usually look like a flat rectangle or square. even though they can take up a lot of space, they are often found in homes, for example, on the simplest fridge magnets. in addition, they are used in protective clothing, as well as various types of holders, such as for tools or knives.

Horseshoe-shaped magnets – well-known but quite impractical

The most commonly associated magnet, often painted red and blue. it is not very frequently used in industry, as its design does not allow for very strong attraction. however, it sometimes comes in handy for finding small metal elements. it is also indispensable in school experiments.

Spherical magnets – primarily a great toy

Spherical magnets are most often encountered as clusters of many small elements used for assembling various shapes. in industry, they are not very popular due to their somewhat cumbersome nature, but sometimes they are used in the production of jewelry clasps.
each of the mentioned shapes serves a different purpose, and while some are more versatile than others, it does not mean they are not useful. the shape of the magnet is best matched to the purpose it is meant to serve.

FAQ - Good to know

Yes, shape affects field distribution. Long and thin magnets have a deeper field, while flat and wide ones hold stronger on contact, but at a short distance.
Rings with a countersunk hole are ideal for screwing to wood or a wall. They serve as furniture locks, tool holders, or fastening elements.
Arc magnets are an element of the construction of electric motors and generators. Their shape is matched to the curvature of the rotor or stator, which maximizes motor efficiency.
