The magnetic separator, namely the magnetic roller, uses the power of neodymium magnets, which are welded in a casing made of stainless steel mostly AISI304. In this way, it is possible to effectively separate ferromagnetic elements from other materials. A fundamental component of its operation is the repulsion of N and S poles of neodymium magnets, which causes magnetic substances to be attracted. The thickness of the magnet and its structure's pitch affect the power and range of the separator's operation.
Generally speaking, magnetic separators are designed to segregate ferromagnetic particles. If the cans are made of ferromagnetic materials, a magnetic separator will be effective. However, if the cans are made of non-ferromagnetic materials, such as aluminum, the magnetic separator will not be effective.
Yes, magnetic rollers find application in food production for the elimination of metallic contaminants, for example iron fragments or iron dust. Our rods are made from acid-resistant steel, EN 1.4301, approved for use in food.
Magnetic rollers, often called magnetic separators, find application in food production, metal separation as well as recycling. They help in removing iron dust during the process of separating metals from other wastes.
Our magnetic rollers are built with a neodymium magnet placed in a stainless steel tube casing made of stainless steel with a wall thickness of 1mm.
Both ends of the magnetic bar can be with M8 threaded holes - 18 mm, allowing for simple mounting in machines or magnetic filter drawers. A "blind" version is also possible in manual separators.
In terms of magnetic properties, magnetic bars differ in terms of magnetic force lines, flux density and the area of operation of the magnetic field. We produce them in materials, N42 and N52.
Generally it is believed that the stronger the magnet, the more efficient it is. But, the effectiveness of the magnet's power is dependent on the height of the used magnet and the quality of the material [N42] or [N52], as well as on the area of application and anticipated needs. The standard operating temperature of a magnetic bar is 80°C.
When the magnet is more flat, the magnetic force lines are more compressed. By contrast, in the case of a thicker magnet, the force lines will be extended and extend over a greater distance.
For constructing the casings of magnetic separators - rollers, most often stainless steel is employed, especially types AISI 304, AISI 316, and AISI 316L.
In a saltwater environment, type AISI 316 steel is highly recommended thanks to its excellent anti-corrosion properties.
Magnetic rollers stand out for their specific arrangement of poles and their capability to attract magnetic substances directly onto their surface, in contrast to other devices that often use more complicated filtration systems.
Technical designations and terms related to magnetic separators include among others magnet pitch, polarity, and magnetic induction, as well as the steel type applied.
Magnetic induction for a roller is measured using a teslameter or a gaussmeter with a flat Hall-effect probe, seeking the highest magnetic field value near the magnetic pole. The outcome is checked in a value table - the lowest is N30. All designations below N27 or N25 indicate recycling that falls below the standard - they are not suitable.
Neodymium magnetic bars offer many advantages, including excellent separation efficiency, strong magnetic field, and durability. On the other hand, among the drawbacks, one can mention the requirement for frequent cleaning, greater weight, and potential installation difficulties.
By ensuring proper maintenance of neodymium magnetic rollers, it’s worth regularly cleaning them from contaminants, avoiding extreme temperatures up to 80°C, and shielding them from moisture if the threads are not sealed – in ours, they are. The rollers feature waterproofing IP67, so if they are not sealed, the magnets inside can rust and weaken. Magnetic field measurements is recommended be carried out every two years. Caution should be taken during use, as there is a risk getting pinched. If the protective tube is only 0.5 mm thick, it may wear out, which in turn could cause problems with the magnetic rod seal and product contamination. The effective range of the roller corresponds to its diameter: fi25mm gives an active range of about 25mm, while fi32 gives an active range of about 40mm.
A magnetic roller is a magnetic separator made from a neodymium magnet enclosed in a cylindrical stainless steel housing, which are used to remove metal contaminants from bulk and granular materials. They are used in the food industry, recycling, and plastic processing, where the removal of iron metals and iron filings is essential.

Advantages as well as disadvantages of neodymium magnets NdFeB.

Apart from immense power, neodymium magnets have the following advantages:

  • They do not lose their strength (of the magnet). After approximately 10 years, their strength decreases by only ~1% (theoretically),
  • They protect against demagnetization caused by external magnetic field very well,
  • Thanks to the shiny finish and nickel, gold, or silver coating, they have an aesthetic appearance,
  • They have very high magnetic induction on the surface of the magnet,
  • Thanks to their high temperature resistance, they can operate (depending on the shape) even at temperatures up to 230°C and above...
  • The ability for precise shaping or customization to specific needs – neodymium magnets can be produced in a wide range of shapes and sizes, which enhances their versatility in applications.
  • Wide application in modern technologies – are utilized in HDD drives, electric drive mechanisms, medical devices or various technologically advanced devices.

Disadvantages of neodymium magnets:

  • They are fragile when subjected to a powerful impact. If the magnets are exposed to impacts, we recommend using magnets in a metal holder. The steel housing in the form of a holder protects the magnet from impacts and at the same time increases its overall strength,
  • High temperatures can reduce the strength of neodymium magnets. Typically, after heating above 80°C, most of them experience a permanent reduction in strength (although it is dependent on the form and size). To prevent this, we offer special magnets marked with the symbol [AH], which are highly resistant to high temperatures. They can operate even at temperatures up to 230°C, making them an ideal solution for applications requiring high-temperature operation,
  • They rust in a humid environment - during outdoor use, we recommend using waterproof magnets, such as those made of rubber or plastic,
  • Limited ability to create threads or complex shapes in the magnet - the use of a housing is recommended - magnetic holder
  • Possible danger associated with microscopic parts of magnets can be dangerous, in case of ingestion, which is crucial in the aspect of protecting young children. Additionally, miniscule components of these devices are able to complicate diagnosis when they are in the body.

Caution with Neodymium Magnets

Neodymium magnets can attract to each other, pinch the skin, and cause significant injuries.

If the joining of neodymium magnets is not under control, at that time they may crumble and also crack. You can't move them to each other. At a distance less than 10 cm you should hold them very strongly.

Neodymium magnets are over 10 times stronger than ferrite magnets (the ones in speakers), and their power can surprise you.

To handle magnets properly, it is best to familiarize yourself with our information beforehand. This will help you avoid significant harm to your body and the magnets themselves.

Neodymium magnets should not be around children.

Not all neodymium magnets are toys, so do not let children play with them. Small magnets pose a serious choking hazard or can attract to each other in the intestines. In such cases, the only solution is to undergo surgery to remove the magnets, and otherwise, it can even lead to death.

Keep neodymium magnets away from people with pacemakers.

In the case of neodymium magnets, there is a strong magnetic field. As a result, it interferes with the operation of a heart pacemaker. Even if the magnetic field does not affect the device, it can damage its components or deactivate the entire device.

Do not place neodymium magnets near a computer HDD, TV, and wallet.

Strong magnetic fields emitted by neodymium magnets can destroy magnetic storage media such as floppy disks, credit cards, magnetic ID cards, cassette tapes, video tapes, or other devices. In addition, they can damage televisions, VCRs, computer monitors, and CRT displays. Avoid placing neodymium magnets in close proximity to electronic devices.

Neodymium magnets are especially fragile, resulting in their breakage.

In the event of a collision between two neodymium magnets, it can result in them getting chipped. Despite being made of metal and coated with a shiny nickel plating, they are not as hard as steel. At the moment of connection between the magnets, tiny sharp metal pieces can be propelled in various directions at high speed. Eye protection is recommended.

Under no circumstances should neodymium magnets be brought close to GPS and smartphones.

Neodymium magnets are a source of intense magnetic fields that cause interference with magnetometers and compasses used in navigation, as well as internal compasses of smartphones and GPS devices.

Neodymium magnets can demagnetize at high temperatures.

In certain circumstances, Neodymium magnets may experience demagnetization when subjected to high temperatures.

Avoid contact with neodymium magnets if you have a nickel allergy.

Studies show a small percentage of people have allergies to certain metals, including nickel. An allergic reaction often manifests as skin redness and rash. If you have a nickel allergy, you can try wearing gloves or simply avoid direct contact with nickel-plated neodymium magnets.

Dust and powder from neodymium magnets are flammable.

Avoid drilling or mechanical processing of neodymium magnets. If the magnet is crushed into fine powder or dust, it becomes highly flammable.
