What materials can be used to produce magnets?

|

A magnet is a device that allows for the alteration of the magnetic field. Widely used in industry, medicine, and every household, it is not often the subject of consideration. However, it is worth knowing that magnets differ in the materials they are made from, and consequently, in their various applications. We present the most popular types of these products along with their example uses.

Ferrite magnets – the most classic, but are they the best?

Ferrite magnets were until recently the most popular models of all. most often made of barium ferrite, they are characterized by high corrosion resistance and low price. however, they are quite brittle, and the attraction force sometimes does not match other models. despite this, they are still used in electric motors, various types of holders, and speakers.

Neodymium materials – the strongest type of all

The ability to attract really large weights is the hallmark of neodymium magnets. made of a compound of neodymium, iron, and boron, they are not as corrosion-resistant, so they are covered with a special additional layer that does not affect their attraction. they are used in many sectors from electronics to mechanics, and are also used in underwater searches.

Alnico magnets – very resistant, but require caution

Made of aluminum, nickel, and cobalt, these types of products have the greatest natural resistance to corrosion and high temperatures. unfortunately, they are also highly susceptible to demagnetization, so they should be used cautiously. they are most often found in measuring devices, sometimes in engines and generators, anywhere where strength is needed at certain temperatures.

Samarium-cobalt magnets – useful in specialized use

Like alnico, samarium-cobalt magnets are highly resistant to temperature and rust. however, they are made of samarium and cobalt. this alloy also has some resistance to demagnetization. it is used in the production of prostheses and medical implants, as well as in mechanical bearings and sensors.
each magnet has different properties and characteristics. thanks to such a wide variety, everyone can easily use them for their own needs.

Frequently Asked Questions

The main components are Neodymium (Nd), Iron (Fe), and Boron (B). Trace amounts of Dysprosium or Praseodymium are often added to increase temperature and corrosion resistance.
It is a complex process: alloy melting, milling into micron powder, pressing in a magnetic field (orienting), and annealing. Finally, the magnet is ground, coated, and magnetized.
They are like porcelain. Although they look like metal (due to nickel coating), inside they are a brittle sinter. They break easily when dropped or in an uncontrolled collision.
