What problems can arise when shipping a neodymium magnet?

|

Magnetic neodymium magnets are very strong. Even a small magnet can hold a weight several times its size, and larger ones can have a load-bearing capacity of even hundreds of kilograms. If such a magnet attaches to a metal surface, detaching it can be really difficult. While users should be well aware of this when searching for items underwater or in other deliberate uses, it's entirely different when it comes to packages. Incorrectly packaged large magnets can get stuck somewhere during transport, either in the courier's vehicle or on the sorting line. There have been cases where such a situation caused a significant delay and incurred costs for the shipping company. Safety is also a concern. The force of these magnets is so great that they can cause serious injuries, contusions, or fractures. Couriers deal with hundreds of packages every day, and if they had to be extra cautious with each one, their work would be much slower. However, if such a magnet is improperly packaged, it can pose a significant risk to those who come into contact with the shipment. That's why it's crucial to ensure that negligence does not create any unnecessary risks.

How to properly package magnets?

A properly packaged magnet should not pose any danger, both to vehicles and sorting lines, as well as to people coming into contact with the shipment. The key is to maintain an appropriate distance from the box's walls on all sides. Many people forget about the bottom when packing, either placing the magnet directly on a thin pad or even on the cardboard itself. If packing was done on a wooden table, nothing might happen, but if a courier places such a package on the floor of a vehicle, they might not be able to detach it. For magnets with a diameter of several centimeters, you should allocate several more centimeters for spacing, so the box needs to have the right dimensions. For smaller magnets, the gap from the walls can be smaller, but you should still provide at least a few centimeters. This is because the magnetic force of the magnet decreases rapidly with distance, and even at a short distance, the magnetic field will be weak enough not to cause any problems. The question remains, what to use for padding. It definitely cannot be corrugated cardboard or loosely placed papers as they would quickly get crushed. Styrofoam works very well; it has sufficient hardness to ensure safety. You can also use chipboard or wooden boards near the magnet and surround the rest with styrofoam.

How to transport neodymium magnets?

By Plane: Neodymium magnets should not be carried in carry-on luggage. It is possible to transport them in checked luggage if the magnet is properly shielded, for example, covered with metal sheets, to minimize the risk of interference.
By Car: When transporting neodymium magnets in a car, it's best to place them in the trunk. Avoid placing them near the airbag system to prevent accidental deployment. Magnets can interfere with the GPS signal, especially in newer car models where the GPS module is located under the handbrake lever. In some models, such as Mercedes, this may even prevent the car from starting, especially if they are equipped with an SOS system.

Q&A - Questions and Answers

Courier shipping requires 'shielding'. The magnet must be in the center of the box, surrounded by a thick layer of filler (min. 5-10 cm), so the field is undetectable outside the package.
It is complicated. Strong magnets can disrupt aircraft navigation. Packages must pass a compass test. Using steel sheets inside the packaging to close the field is often required.
Use a box in a box. Magnet inside, styrofoam/sponge around, and preferably steel sheet. Arrange magnets so their fields cancel out (anti-parallel).
