Advantages and disadvantages of neodymium magnets NdFeB.

In addition to immense power, neodymium magnets have the following advantages:

  • They do not lose their strength (of the magnet). After about 10 years, their strength decreases by only ~1% (theoretically),
  • They protect against demagnetization caused by external magnetic field very well,
  • In other words, thanks to the shiny coating of nickel, gold, or silver, the element acquires an aesthetic appearance,
  • They have very high magnetic induction on the surface of the magnet,
  • By using an appropriate combination of materials, they can achieve significant thermal resistance, allowing them to operate at temperatures up to 230°C and above...
  • Thanks to the flexibility in shaping and the ability to adapt to specific requirements – neodymium magnets can be produced in a wide range of shapes and sizes, which enhances their versatility in applications.
  • Wide application in the industry of new technologies – find application in hard drives, electric motors, medical devices and other highly developed apparatuses.

Disadvantages of neodymium magnets:

  • They are fragile when subjected to a strong impact. If the magnets are exposed to impacts, we recommend using magnets in a steel housing. The steel housing in the form of a holder protects the magnet from impacts and at the same time increases its overall strength,
  • Magnets lose their power due to exposure to high temperatures. In most cases, when the temperature exceeds 80°C, these magnets experience permanent reduction in strength (although it is worth noting that this is dependent on the form and size of the magnet). To avoid this problem, we offer special magnets marked with the [AH] symbol, which exhibit high temperature resistance. They can operate even at temperatures as high as 230°C or more,
  • Due to their susceptibility to corrosion in a humid environment, we recommend using waterproof magnets made of rubber, plastic, or other moisture-resistant materials when using them outdoors,
  • The use of a cover - a magnetic holder is recommended due to the limited production capabilities of creating threads or complex shapes in the magnet
  • Potential hazard associated with microscopic parts of magnets pose a threat, when accidentally ingested, which is particularly important in the context of children's health. Furthermore, tiny parts of these products can be problematic in medical diagnosis after entering the body.

Precautions with Neodymium Magnets

Keep neodymium magnets away from TV, wallet, and computer HDD.

Magnetic fields generated by neodymium magnets can damage magnetic storage media such as floppy disks, credit cards, magnetic ID cards, cassette tapes, video tapes, or other similar devices. In addition, they can damage televisions, VCRs, computer monitors, and CRT displays. You should especially avoid placing neodymium magnets near electronic devices.

Magnets made of neodymium are delicate as well as can easily break and shatter.

Neodymium magnets are delicate and will shatter if allowed to collide with each other, even from a distance of a few centimeters. They are coated with a shiny nickel plating similar to steel, but they are not as hard. At the moment of connection between the magnets, tiny sharp metal fragments can be propelled in various directions at high speed. Eye protection is recommended.

Magnets are not toys, children should not play with them.

Neodymium magnets are not toys. Be cautious and make sure no child plays with them. Small magnets can pose a serious choking hazard. If multiple magnets are swallowed, they can attract to each other through the intestinal walls, causing significant injuries, and even death.

Magnets will attract to each other, so remember not to allow them to pinch together without control or place your fingers in their path.

Magnets attract each other within a distance of several to around 10 cm from each other. Remember not to place fingers between magnets or alternatively in their path when attract. Depending on how massive the neodymium magnets are, they can lead to a cut or alternatively a fracture.

Neodymium magnets are the most powerful magnets ever created, and their strength can surprise you.

Make sure to review all the information we have provided. This will help you avoid harm to your body and damage to the magnets.

Dust and powder from neodymium magnets are flammable.

Do not attempt to drill into neodymium magnets. Mechanical processing is also not recommended. Once crushed into fine powder or dust, this material becomes highly flammable.

Keep neodymium magnets away from people with pacemakers.

Neodymium magnets generate strong magnetic fields. As a result, they interfere with the operation of a pacemaker. This is because many of these devices are equipped with a function that deactivates the device in a magnetic field.

Avoid contact with neodymium magnets if you have a nickel allergy.

Studies clearly indicate a small percentage of people who suffer from metal allergies such as nickel. An allergic reaction often manifests as skin redness and rash. If you have a nickel allergy, try wearing gloves or avoid direct contact with nickel-plated neodymium magnets.

Keep neodymium magnets away from GPS and smartphones.

Neodymium magnets are a source of intense magnetic fields that cause interference with magnetometers and compasses used in navigation, as well as internal compasses of smartphones and GPS devices.

Neodymium magnets can demagnetize at high temperatures.

Although magnets have demonstrated their effectiveness up to 80°C or 175°F, the temperature can vary depending on the type, shape, and intended use of the specific magnet.

In order for you to know how strong neodymium magnets are and why they are so dangerous, read the article - Dangerous very powerful neodymium magnets.
