The magnetic separator, namely the magnetic roller, uses the force of neodymium magnets, which are placed in a construction made of stainless steel usually AISI304. As a result, it is possible to precisely remove ferromagnetic elements from different substances. A fundamental component of its operation is the repulsion of N and S poles of neodymium magnets, which enables magnetic substances to be collected. The thickness of the magnet and its structure's pitch determine the power and range of the separator's operation.
Generally speaking, magnetic separators are designed to separate ferromagnetic elements. If the cans are ferromagnetic, the separator will be able to separate them. However, if the cans are made of non-ferromagnetic materials, such as aluminum, the separator will not effectively segregate them.
Yes, magnetic rollers find application in the food industry to remove metallic contaminants, such as iron fragments or iron dust. Our rods are constructed from durable acid-resistant steel, AISI 304, suitable for contact with food.
Magnetic rollers, often called magnetic separators, find application in metal separation, food production as well as recycling. They help in extracting iron dust during the process of separating metals from other wastes.
Our magnetic rollers consist of neodymium magnets embedded in a stainless steel tube casing of stainless steel with a wall thickness of 1mm.
Both ends of the magnetic bar will be with M8 threaded holes - 18 mm, allowing for easy installation in machines or magnetic filter drawers. A "blind" version is also possible in manual separators.
In terms of magnetic properties, magnetic bars stand out in terms of magnetic force lines, flux density and the field of the magnetic field. We produce them in two materials, N42 as well as N52.
Usually it is believed that the stronger the magnet, the more effective. But, the effectiveness of the magnet's power is dependent on the height of the used magnet and the quality of the material [N42] or [N52], as well as on the area of use and anticipated needs. The standard operating temperature of a magnetic bar is 80°C.
In the case where the magnet is thin, the magnetic force lines are short. Otherwise, when the magnet is thick, the force lines are longer and reach further.
For making the casings of magnetic separators - rollers, frequently stainless steel is utilized, particularly types AISI 304, AISI 316, and AISI 316L.
In a saltwater contact, type AISI 316 steel is recommended due to its outstanding corrosion resistance.
Magnetic bars are characterized by their specific arrangement of poles and their ability to attract magnetic particles directly onto their surface, in contrast to other separators that may utilize more complicated filtration systems.
Technical designations and terms pertaining to magnetic separators include amongst others polarity, magnetic induction, magnet pitch, as well as the type of steel used.
Magnetic induction for a magnet on a roller is measured using a teslameter or a gaussmeter with a flat Hall-effect probe, aiming to find the highest magnetic field value near the magnetic pole. The outcome is checked in a value table - the lowest is N30. All designations below N27 or N25 indicate recycling that doesn't meet the standard - they are not suitable.
Neodymium magnetic rollers offer a range of benefits such as higher attracting power, longer lifespan, and effectiveness in separating fine metal particles. Disadvantages may include the need for regular cleaning, higher cost, and potential installation challenges.
By ensuring proper maintenance of neodymium magnetic rollers, you should regularly cleaning them from deposits, avoiding extreme temperatures above 80 degrees, and protecting them from moisture if the threads are not sealed – in ours, they are. The rollers feature waterproofing IP67, so if they are not sealed, the magnets inside can rust and weaken. Testing of the rollers is recommended be carried out every two years. Care should be taken, as there is a risk of finger injury. If the protective tube is only 0.5 mm thick, it may wear out, which in turn could cause problems with the magnetic rod seal and product contamination. The effective range of the roller corresponds to its diameter: fi25mm gives an active range of about 25mm, while fi32 gives an active range of about 40mm.
Magnetic rollers are cylindrical neodymium magnets placed in a casing made of corrosion-resistant stainless steel, used for separating ferromagnetic contaminants from raw materials. They are used in the food industry, recycling, and plastic processing, where the removal of iron metals and iron filings is essential.

Advantages and disadvantages of neodymium magnets NdFeB.

In addition to immense strength, neodymium magnets have the following advantages:

  • They do not lose power over time. After approximately 10 years, their power decreases by only ~1% (theoretically),
  • They are highly resistant to demagnetization by external magnetic sources,
  • By applying a shiny coating of nickel, gold, or silver, the element gains an aesthetic appearance,
  • They possess very high magnetic induction on the surface of the magnet,
  • Magnetic neodymium magnets are characterized by very high magnetic induction on the surface of the magnet and can operate (depending on the form) even at temperatures of 230°C or higher...
  • Thanks to the flexibility in shaping and the ability to adapt to specific requirements – neodymium magnets can be produced in a wide range of shapes and sizes, which amplifies their universality in usage.
  • Key role in advanced technologically fields – are used in hard drives, electric drive mechanisms, medical devices and very highly developed apparatuses.

Disadvantages of neodymium magnets:

  • They are fragile when subjected to a strong impact. If the magnets are exposed to impacts, we recommend using magnets in a steel housing. The steel housing in the form of a holder protects the magnet from impacts and at the same time increases its overall strength,
  • Magnets lose their strength due to exposure to high temperatures. In most cases, when the temperature exceeds 80°C, these magnets experience permanent loss in strength (although it is worth noting that this is dependent on the shape and size of the magnet). To avoid this problem, we offer special magnets marked with the [AH] symbol, which exhibit high temperature resistance. They can operate even at temperatures as high as 230°C or more,
  • They rust in a humid environment. For outdoor use, we recommend using waterproof magnets, such as those made of rubber or plastic,
  • Limited ability to create threads or complex shapes in the magnet - the use of a housing is recommended - magnetic holder
  • Possible danger to health from tiny fragments of magnets are risky, when accidentally ingested, which is crucial in the context of child safety. Furthermore, small elements of these products are able to be problematic in medical diagnosis in case of swallowing.

Safety Precautions

The magnet is coated with nickel. Therefore, exercise caution if you have an allergy.

Studies clearly indicate a small percentage of people who suffer from metal allergies such as nickel. An allergic reaction often manifests as skin redness and rash. If you have a nickel allergy, try wearing gloves or avoid direct contact with nickel-plated neodymium magnets.

Neodymium magnetic are especially fragile, resulting in their breakage.

Neodymium magnets are delicate and will crack if allowed to collide with each other, even from a distance of a few centimeters. Despite being made of metal as well as coated with a shiny nickel plating, they are not as hard as steel. At the moment of connection between the magnets, small sharp metal pieces can be propelled in various directions at high speed. Eye protection is recommended.

Neodymium magnets are primarily characterized by their significant internal force. They attract to each other, and any object that comes in their way will be affected.

Neodymium magnets will bounce and touch together within a distance of several to almost 10 cm from each other.

Dust and powder from neodymium magnets are flammable.

Avoid drilling or mechanical processing of neodymium magnets. Once crushed into fine powder or dust, this material becomes highly flammable.

Keep neodymium magnets away from GPS and smartphones.

Magnetic fields generated by neodymium magnets interfere with compasses and magnetometers used in navigation, as well as internal compasses of smartphones and GPS devices.

Neodymium magnets are the strongest magnets ever invented. Their power can surprise you.

Read the information on our website on how to properly utilize neodymium magnets and avoid significant harm to your body and unintentional damage to the magnets.

People with pacemakers are advised to avoid neodymium magnets.

In the case of neodymium magnets, there is a strong magnetic field. As a result, it interferes with the operation of a heart pacemaker. Even if the magnetic field does not affect the device, it can damage its components or deactivate the entire device.

Neodymium magnets can demagnetize at high temperatures.

Despite the fact that magnets have been observed to maintain their efficacy up to temperatures of 80°C or 175°F, it's essential to consider that this threshold may fluctuate depending on the magnet's type, configuration, and intended usage.

You should keep neodymium magnets at a safe distance from the wallet, computer, and TV.

The strong magnetic field generated by neodymium magnets can damage magnetic media such as floppy disks, video tapes, HDDs, credit cards, magnetic ID cards, cassette tapes, or other devices. They can also damage videos, televisions, CRT computer monitors. Remember not to place neodymium magnets close to these electronic devices.

It is important to maintain neodymium magnets away from children.

Remember that neodymium magnets are not toys. Do not allow children to play with them. In the case of swallowing multiple magnets simultaneously, they can attract to each other through the intestinal walls. In the worst case scenario, this can lead to death.

So you are aware of why neodymium magnets are so dangerous, see the article titled How dangerous are strong neodymium magnets?.
