Neodymium disc magnets offer a range of advantages in relation to other magnet shapes, which cause them to be an excellent solution for various uses:
Contact Surface: Due to their flat shape, disc magnets guarantee a significant contact surface with other elements, which can be beneficial in applications requiring a stronger magnetic connection.
Applications in Technology: The magnets are often utilized in different devices, like sensors, stepper motors, or speakers, where a flat shape is essential for their operation.
Mounting: The flat form's flat shape facilitates mounting, especially when it's necessary to adhere the magnet to another surface.
Design Flexibility: The flat shape of the magnets provides designers with greater flexibility in arranging them in devices, which can sometimes be more difficult with magnets of more complex shapes.
Stability: In certain applications, the flat base of a disc magnet may offer better stability, minimizing the risk of sliding or rotating. It should be noted that the optimal shape of a magnet depends on the specific project and requirements. In certain cases, other shapes, such as cylindrical or spherical, might be more suitable.

Advantages and disadvantages of neodymium magnets NdFeB.

In addition to immense strength, neodymium magnets have the following advantages:

  • They do not lose their strength (of the magnet). After about 10 years, their strength decreases by only ~1% (theoretically),
  • They are exceptionally resistant to demagnetization caused by an external magnetic field,
  • In other words, thanks to the shiny coating of nickel, gold, or silver, the element acquires an aesthetic appearance,
  • They have very high magnetic induction on the surface of the magnet,
  • By using an appropriate combination of materials, they can achieve significant thermal resistance, allowing them to operate at temperatures up to 230°C and above...
  • Due to the option of accurate forming and adaptation to individual needs – neodymium magnets can be produced in various forms and dimensions, which enhances their versatility in applications.
  • Wide application in modern technologies – are utilized in hard drives, electric motors, medical equipment and other modern machines.

Disadvantages of neodymium magnets:

  • They can break as they are fragile when subjected to a powerful impact. If the magnets are exposed to impacts, it is suggested using magnets in a protective case. The steel housing in the form of a holder protects the magnet from impacts and simultaneously increases its overall strength,
  • High temperatures can reduce the strength of neodymium magnets. Typically, after heating above 80°C, most of them experience a permanent reduction in strength (although it is dependent on the shape and size). To prevent this, we offer special magnets marked with the symbol [AH], which are highly resistant to high temperatures. They can operate even at temperatures up to 230°C, making them an ideal solution for applications requiring high-temperature operation,
  • Magnets exposed to a humid environment can corrode. Therefore, when using them outdoors, we recommend using waterproof magnets made of rubber, plastic, or other moisture-resistant materials,
  • The use of a cover or a magnetic holder is recommended due to the limited possibilities of manufacturing threads or complex shapes in the magnet
  • Potential hazard arising from small pieces of magnets pose a threat, if swallowed, which is particularly important in the aspect of protecting young children. Additionally, tiny parts of these devices can be problematic in medical diagnosis when they are in the body.

Be Cautious with Neodymium Magnets

Neodymium magnetic are known for being fragile, which can cause them to become damaged.

In the event of a collision between two neodymium magnets, it can result in them getting chipped. They are coated with a shiny nickel plating similar to steel, but they are not as hard. At the moment of collision between the magnets, small sharp metal pieces can be propelled in various directions at high speed. Eye protection is recommended.

Keep neodymium magnets away from children.

Neodymium magnets are not toys. Do not allow children to play with them. In the case of swallowing multiple magnets simultaneously, they can attract to each other through the intestinal walls. In the worst case scenario, this can lead to death.

Neodymium Magnets can attract to each other, pinch the skin, and cause significant swellings.

Magnets may crack or crumble with uncontrolled connecting to each other. Remember not to approach them to each other or have them firmly in hands at a distance less than 10 cm.

Dust and powder from neodymium magnets are flammable.

Do not attempt to drill into neodymium magnets. Mechanical processing is also not recommended. Once crushed into fine powder or dust, this material becomes highly flammable.

The magnet is coated with nickel. Therefore, exercise caution if you have an allergy.

Studies show a small percentage of people have allergies to certain metals, including nickel. An allergic reaction often manifests as skin redness and rash. If you have a nickel allergy, you can try wearing gloves or simply avoid direct contact with nickel-plated neodymium magnets.

Under no circumstances should neodymium magnets be placed near a computer HDD, TV, and wallet.

The strong magnetic field generated by neodymium magnets can destroy magnetic media such as floppy disks, video tapes, HDDs, credit cards, magnetic ID cards, cassette tapes, or other devices. They can also destroy devices like video players, televisions, CRT computer monitors. Do not forget to keep neodymium magnets away from these electronic devices.

Avoid bringing neodymium magnets close to a phone or GPS.

Neodymium magnets produce strong magnetic fields that interfere with magnetometers and compasses used in navigation, as well as internal compasses of smartphones and GPS devices.

Neodymium magnets can become demagnetized at high temperatures.

Whilst Neodymium magnets can demagnetize at high temperatures, it's important to note that the extent of this effect can vary based on factors such as the magnet's material, shape, and intended application.

Neodymium magnets are the most powerful, most remarkable magnets on the planet, and the surprising force between them can shock you at first.

Please review the information on how to handle neodymium magnets and avoid significant harm to your body, as well as prevent unintentional disruption to the magnets.

People with pacemakers are advised to avoid neodymium magnets.

Neodymium magnets generate strong magnetic fields. As a result, they interfere with the operation of a pacemaker. This is because many of these devices are equipped with a function that deactivates the device in a magnetic field.

Please see the article - What danger lies in neodymium magnets? You will learn how to handle them properly.
