Neodymium disc magnets provide a range of advantages compared to other magnet shapes, which cause them to be the ideal choice for various uses:
Contact Surface: Due to their flat shape, disc magnets provide a larger contact surface with other elements, which is beneficial in applications requiring a stronger magnetic connection.
Applications in Technology: They are often used in many devices, such as sensors, stepper motors, or speakers, where a thin and wide shape is essential for their operation.
Mounting: The flat form's flat shape makes mounting, especially when it's necessary to adhere the magnet to a surface.
Design Flexibility: The disc shape of the magnets gives designers with significant flexibility in placing them in constructions, which can be more difficult with magnets of other shapes.
Stability: In some applications, the flat base of a disc magnet may provide better stability, minimizing the risk of sliding or rotating. However, it's important to remember that the optimal shape of a magnet is dependent on the specific project and requirements. In certain cases, other shapes, like cylindrical or spherical, might be more suitable.

Shopping tips

Advantages as well as disadvantages of neodymium magnets NdFeB.

In addition to immense strength, neodymium magnets have the following advantages:

  • They do not lose strength over time - after 10 years, their power decreases by only ~1% (theoretically),
  • They are highly resistant to demagnetization by external magnetic sources,
  • In other words, thanks to the shiny coating of nickel, gold, or silver, the element acquires an aesthetic appearance,
  • They possess very high magnetic induction on the surface of the magnet,
  • Thanks to their high temperature resistance, they can operate (depending on the shape) even at temperatures up to 230°C and above...
  • Thanks to the flexibility in shaping and the ability to adapt to specific requirements – neodymium magnets can be produced in various forms and dimensions, which amplifies their universality in usage.
  • Key role in the industry of new technologies – are utilized in hard drives, electric motors, medical devices and various technologically advanced devices.

Disadvantages of neodymium magnets:

  • They can break when subjected to a strong impact. If the magnets are exposed to impacts, we recommend using magnets in a steel housing. The steel housing in the form of a holder protects the magnet from impacts, and at the same time increases its overall strength,
  • They lose power at high temperatures. Most neodymium magnets experience permanent loss of strength when heated above 80°C (depending on the form and height). However, we also offer special magnets with high temperature resistance, up to 230°C,
  • Due to their susceptibility to corrosion in a humid environment, we suggest using waterproof magnets made of rubber, plastic, or other moisture-resistant materials when using them outdoors,
  • The use of a cover - a magnetic holder is recommended due to the limited production capabilities of creating threads or complex shapes in the magnet
  • Potential hazard associated with microscopic parts of magnets can be dangerous, when accidentally ingested, which is crucial in the aspect of protecting young children. Furthermore, tiny parts of these devices can complicate diagnosis in case of swallowing.

Safety Guidelines with Neodymium Magnets

Keep neodymium magnets away from people with pacemakers.

Neodymium magnets generate strong magnetic fields. As a result, they interfere with the operation of a pacemaker. This happens because such devices have a function to deactivate them in a magnetic field.

Do not give neodymium magnets to youngest children.

Remember that neodymium magnets are not toys. Do not allow children to play with them. In the case of swallowing multiple magnets simultaneously, they can attract to each other through the intestinal walls. In the worst case scenario, this can lead to death.

Neodymium magnets can demagnetize at high temperatures.

Despite the general resilience of magnets, their ability to retain their magnetic strength can be influenced by factors like the type of material used, the magnet's shape, and the intended purpose for which it is employed.

Magnets will attract to each other, so remember not to allow them to pinch together without control or place your fingers in their path.

If joining of neodymium magnets is not under control, at that time they may crumble and crack. You can't move them to each other. At a distance less than 10 cm you should have them very strongly.

Under no circumstances should neodymium magnets be placed near a computer HDD, TV, and wallet.

The strong magnetic field generated by neodymium magnets can destroy magnetic media such as floppy disks, video tapes, HDDs, credit cards, magnetic ID cards, cassette tapes, etc. devices. They can also damage devices like video players, televisions, CRT computer monitors. Do not forget to keep neodymium magnets at a safe distance from these electronic devices.

Under no circumstances should neodymium magnets be brought close to GPS and smartphones.

Magnetic fields can interfere with compasses and magnetometers used in aviation and maritime navigation, as well as internal compasses of smartphones and GPS devices. There are neodymium magnets in every smartphone, for example, in the microphone and speakers.

Dust and powder from neodymium magnets are flammable.

Avoid drilling or mechanical processing of neodymium magnets. If the magnet is crushed into fine powder or dust, it becomes highly flammable.

Neodymium magnets are over 10 times stronger than ferrite magnets (the ones in speakers), and their power can shock you.

Make sure to review all the information we have provided. This will help you avoid harm to your body and damage to the magnets.

If you have a nickel allergy, avoid contact with neodymium magnets.

Studies show a small percentage of people have allergies to certain metals, including nickel. An allergic reaction often manifests as skin redness and rash. If you have a nickel allergy, you can try wearing gloves or simply avoid direct contact with nickel-plated neodymium magnets.

Neodymium magnets are especially delicate, which leads to damage.

Neodymium magnets are fragile and will shatter if allowed to collide with each other, even from a distance of a few centimeters. Despite being made of metal as well as coated with a shiny nickel plating, they are not as hard as steel. In the case of a collision between two magnets, there can be a scattering of small sharp metal fragments in different directions. Protecting your eyes is essential.

So you are aware of why neodymium magnets are so dangerous, see the article titled How dangerous are very powerful neodymium magnets?.
