Neodymium disc magnets provide a range of advantages compared to other magnet shapes, which make an excellent solution for many applications:
Contact Surface: Due to their flat shape, disc magnets provide a significant contact surface with adjoining parts, which is beneficial in applications needing a stronger magnetic connection.
Applications in Technology: The magnets are often employed in many devices, such as sensors, stepper motors, or speakers, where a thin and wide shape is important for their operation.
Mounting: This form's flat shape facilitates mounting, especially when it's necessary to adhere the magnet to a surface.
Design Flexibility: The flat shape of the magnets provides designers with significant flexibility in placing them in devices, which can be more difficult with magnets of other shapes.
Stability: In certain applications, the flat base of a disc magnet can provide better stability, minimizing the risk of shifting or rotating. Nevertheless, one should bear in mind that the optimal shape of a magnet depends on the specific application and requirements. In certain cases, other shapes, such as cylindrical or spherical, might be a better choice.

Advantages and disadvantages of neodymium magnets NdFeB.

In addition to immense power, neodymium magnets have the following advantages:

  • They do not lose their strength (of the magnet). After about 10 years, their power decreases by only ~1% (theoretically),
  • They are highly resistant to demagnetization by external magnetic sources,
  • In other words, thanks to the shiny nickel, gold, or silver finish, the element gains an visually attractive appearance,
  • They have very high magnetic induction on the surface of the magnet,
  • Magnetic neodymium magnets are characterized by very high magnetic induction on the surface of the magnet and can operate (depending on the form) even at temperatures of 230°C or higher...
  • The ability for precise shaping or customization to specific needs – neodymium magnets can be produced in various forms and dimensions, which expands the range of their possible uses.
  • Key role in advanced technologically fields – are utilized in HDD drives, electric drive mechanisms, medical devices and very modern machines.

Disadvantages of neodymium magnets:

  • They are prone to breaking as they are extremely fragile when subjected to a powerful impact. If the magnets are exposed to impacts, it is suggested using magnets in a steel housing. The steel housing in the form of a holder protects the magnet from impacts and simultaneously increases its overall strength,
  • High temperatures can reduce the power of neodymium magnets. Typically, after heating above 80°C, most of them experience a permanent loss in strength (although it is dependent on the shape and size). To prevent this, we offer special magnets marked with the symbol [AH], which are highly resistant to high temperatures. They can operate even at temperatures up to 230°C, making them an ideal solution for applications requiring high-temperature operation,
  • Due to their susceptibility to corrosion in a humid environment, we suggest using waterproof magnets made of rubber, plastic, or other moisture-resistant materials when using them outdoors,
  • The use of a cover or a magnetic holder is recommended due to the limited possibilities of manufacturing threads or complex shapes in the magnet
  • Possible danger to health from tiny fragments of magnets pose a threat, if swallowed, which is crucial in the context of child safety. It's also worth noting that miniscule components of these products are able to complicate diagnosis after entering the body.

Handle Neodymium Magnets Carefully

Avoid contact with neodymium magnets if you have a nickel allergy.

Studies show a small percentage of people have allergies to certain metals, including nickel. An allergic reaction often manifests as skin redness and rash. If you have a nickel allergy, try wearing gloves or avoid direct contact with nickel-plated neodymium magnets.

Neodymium magnets can demagnetize at high temperatures.

Despite the fact that magnets have been found to maintain their efficacy up to temperatures of 80°C or 175°F, it's essential to consider that this threshold may fluctuate depending on the magnet's type, configuration, and intended usage.

Do not place neodymium magnets near a computer HDD, TV, and wallet.

Strong magnetic fields emitted by neodymium magnets can destroy magnetic storage media such as floppy disks, credit cards, magnetic ID cards, cassette tapes, video tapes, or other devices. In addition, they can damage televisions, VCRs, computer monitors, and CRT displays. Avoid placing neodymium magnets in close proximity to electronic devices.

Never bring neodymium magnets close to a phone and GPS.

Magnetic fields generated by neodymium magnets interfere with compasses and magnetometers used in navigation, as well as internal compasses of smartphones and GPS devices.

Do not give neodymium magnets to youngest children.

Neodymium magnets are not toys. You cannot allow them to become toys for children. In such a situation, surgery is necessary to remove them. In the worst case scenario, it can result in death.

Dust and powder from neodymium magnets are highly flammable.

Avoid drilling or mechanical processing of neodymium magnets. If the magnet is crushed into fine powder or dust, it becomes highly flammable.

Neodymium magnets are not recommended for people with pacemakers.

Neodymium magnets generate very strong magnetic fields that can interfere with the operation of a pacemaker. This is because many of these devices are equipped with a function that deactivates the device in a magnetic field.

Magnets will attract to each other, so remember not to allow them to pinch together without control or place your fingers in their path.

Magnets may crack or alternatively crumble with careless connecting to each other. You can't move them to each other. At a distance less than 10 cm you should hold them very firmly.

Comparing neodymium magnets to ferrite magnets (found in speakers), they are 10 times more powerful, and their power can surprise you.

Familiarize yourself with our information to correctly handle these magnets and avoid significant injuries to your body and prevent damage to the magnets.

Neodymium magnetic are delicate as well as can easily break as well as get damaged.

In the event of a collision between two neodymium magnets, it can result in them getting chipped. They are coated with a shiny nickel plating similar to steel, but they are not as hard. At the moment of connection between the magnets, tiny sharp metal fragments can be propelled in various directions at high speed. Eye protection is recommended.

To raise awareness of why neodymium magnets are so dangerous, see the article titled How dangerous are powerful neodymium magnets?.
