Neodymium disc magnets present a range of advantages in relation to other magnet shapes, which make the ideal choice for numerous projects:
Contact Surface: Due to their flat shape, disc magnets provide a significant contact surface with other elements, which can be beneficial in applications needing a stronger magnetic connection.
Applications in Technology: The magnets are often employed in different devices, such as sensors, stepper motors, or speakers, where a thin and wide shape is essential for their operation.
Mounting: The flat form's flat shape facilitates mounting, especially when it's necessary to adhere the magnet to another surface.
Design Flexibility: The flat shape of the magnets allows designers with significant flexibility in arranging them in devices, which can be more difficult with magnets of more complex shapes.
Stability: In certain applications, the flat base of a disc magnet can offer better stability, reducing the risk of sliding or rotating. Nevertheless, one should bear in mind that the optimal shape of a magnet depends on the specific project and requirements. In some cases, other shapes, like cylindrical or spherical, may be a better choice.

Product suggestions

Advantages and disadvantages of neodymium magnets NdFeB.

Apart from immense strength, neodymium magnets have the following advantages:

  • They do not lose their power (of the magnet). After about 10 years, their strength decreases by only ~1% (theoretically),
  • They are highly resistant to demagnetization by external magnetic sources,
  • In other words, thanks to the shiny coating of nickel, gold, or silver, the element acquires an aesthetic appearance,
  • They possess very high magnetic induction on the surface of the magnet,
  • Thanks to their high temperature resistance, they can operate (depending on the form) even at temperatures up to 230°C and above...
  • Thanks to the flexibility in shaping and the ability to adapt to specific requirements – neodymium magnets can be produced in various forms and dimensions, which expands the range of their possible uses.
  • Wide application in advanced technologically fields – find application in hard drives, electric motors, medical apparatus and very advanced devices.

Disadvantages of neodymium magnets:

  • They can break when subjected to a strong impact. If the magnets are exposed to impacts, we recommend using magnets in a protective case. The steel housing in the form of a holder protects the magnet from impacts, and at the same time increases its overall strength,
  • High temperatures can reduce the strength of neodymium magnets. Typically, after heating above 80°C, most of them experience a permanent loss in strength (although it is dependent on the form and size). To prevent this, we offer special magnets marked with the symbol [AH], which are highly resistant to high temperatures. They can operate even at temperatures up to 230°C, making them an ideal solution for applications requiring high-temperature operation,
  • Due to their susceptibility to corrosion in a humid environment, we recommend using waterproof magnets made of rubber, plastic, or other moisture-resistant materials when using them outdoors,
  • The use of a cover - a magnetic holder is recommended due to the limited production capabilities of creating threads or complex shapes in the magnet
  • Potential hazard to health from tiny fragments of magnets can be dangerous, if swallowed, which becomes significant in the context of child safety. It's also worth noting that small elements of these products can hinder the diagnostic process in case of swallowing.

Handle with Care: Neodymium Magnets

Neodymium magnets can demagnetize at high temperatures.

Despite the general resilience of magnets, their ability to retain their magnetic strength can be influenced by factors like the type of material used, the magnet's shape, and the intended purpose for which it is employed.

The magnet coating is made of nickel, so be cautious if you have an allergy.

Studies show a small percentage of people have allergies to certain metals, including nickel. An allergic reaction often manifests as skin redness and rash. If you have a nickel allergy, try wearing gloves or avoid direct contact with nickel-plated neodymium magnets.

It is crucial not to allow the magnets to pinch together uncontrollably or place your fingers in their path as they attract to each other.

If joining of neodymium magnets is not controlled, then they may crumble and crack. You can't move them to each other. At a distance less than 10 cm you should have them very firmly.

Dust and powder from neodymium magnets are highly flammable.

Do not attempt to drill into neodymium magnets. Mechanical processing is also not recommended. Once crushed into fine powder or dust, this material becomes highly flammable.

Neodymium magnets should not be around youngest children.

Remember that neodymium magnets are not toys. Do not allow children to play with them. In the case of swallowing multiple magnets simultaneously, they can attract to each other through the intestinal walls. In the worst case scenario, this can lead to death.

Neodymium magnets are over 10 times more powerful than ferrite magnets (the ones in speakers), and their strength can shock you.

Familiarize yourself with our information to correctly handle these magnets and avoid significant swellings to your body and prevent disruption to the magnets.

Magnets made of neodymium are delicate and can easily crack as well as get damaged.

In the event of a collision between two neodymium magnets, it can result in them getting chipped. They are coated with a shiny nickel plating similar to steel, but they are not as hard. At the moment of collision between the magnets, tiny sharp metal pieces can be propelled in various directions at high speed. Eye protection is recommended.

You should keep neodymium magnets at a safe distance from the wallet, computer, and TV.

Neodymium magnets generate intense magnetic fields that can destroy magnetic media such as floppy disks, video tapes, HDDs, credit cards, magnetic ID cards, cassette tapes, or other devices. They can also damage devices like video players, televisions, CRT computer monitors. Do not forget to keep neodymium magnets at a safe distance from these electronic devices.

People with pacemakers are advised to avoid neodymium magnets.

Neodymium magnets produce strong magnetic fields that can interfere with the operation of a heart pacemaker. However, if the magnetic field does not affect the device, it can damage its components or deactivate the device when it is in a magnetic field.

Keep neodymium magnets away from GPS and smartphones.

Intense magnetic fields generated by neodymium magnets interfere with compasses and magnetometers used in navigation, as well as internal compasses of smartphones and GPS devices.

So that know how powerful neodymium magnets are and why they are so dangerous, read the article - Dangerous very strong neodymium magnets.
