Neodymium disc magnets provide a range of advantages compared to other magnet shapes, which make the best choice for many applications:
Contact Surface: Due to their flat shape, disc magnets guarantee a larger contact surface with other elements, which is beneficial in applications requiring a stronger magnetic connection.
Applications in Technology: The magnets are often used in many devices, such as sensors, stepper motors, or speakers, where a thin and wide shape is important for their operation.
Mounting: Their flat shape facilitates mounting, particularly when it's necessary to adhere the magnet to a surface.
Design Flexibility: The disc shape of the magnets gives designers with significant flexibility in placing them in devices, which can be more difficult with magnets of more complex shapes.
Stability: In some applications, the flat base of a disc magnet can offer better stability, reducing the risk of sliding or rotating. It should be noted that the optimal shape of a magnet is dependent on the specific application and requirements. In some cases, other shapes, like cylindrical or spherical, might be a better choice.

Shopping tips

Advantages as well as disadvantages of neodymium magnets NdFeB.

In addition to immense power, neodymium magnets have the following advantages:

  • They do not lose power over time. After about 10 years, their power decreases by only ~1% (theoretically),
  • They are exceptionally resistant to demagnetization caused by an external magnetic field,
  • In other words, thanks to the shiny coating of nickel, gold, or silver, the element acquires an aesthetic appearance,
  • They have very high magnetic induction on the surface of the magnet,
  • Magnetic neodymium magnets are characterized by hugely high magnetic induction on the surface of the magnet and can operate (depending on the form) even at temperatures of 230°C or higher...
  • Due to the option of accurate forming and adaptation to individual needs – neodymium magnets can be produced in a wide range of shapes and sizes, which amplifies their universality in usage.
  • Wide application in modern technologies – find application in computer drives, electric motors, medical apparatus or very advanced devices.

Disadvantages of neodymium magnets:

  • They can break when subjected to a powerful impact. If the magnets are exposed to impacts, we recommend using magnets in a protective case. The steel housing in the form of a holder protects the magnet from impacts, and at the same time increases its overall strength,
  • They lose power at high temperatures. Most neodymium magnets experience permanent loss of strength when heated above 80°C (depending on the form and height). However, we also offer special magnets with high temperature resistance, up to 230°C,
  • Magnets exposed to a humid environment can corrode. Therefore, when using them outdoors, we recommend using waterproof magnets made of rubber, plastic, or other moisture-resistant materials,
  • Limited ability to create threads or complex shapes in the magnet - the use of a housing is recommended - magnetic holder
  • Health risk associated with microscopic parts of magnets can be dangerous, if swallowed, which is particularly important in the context of children's health. Additionally, tiny parts of these devices are able to complicate diagnosis when they are in the body.

Handle Neodymium Magnets Carefully

Neodymium magnets are not recommended for people with pacemakers.

In the case of neodymium magnets, there is a strong magnetic field. As a result, it interferes with the operation of a heart pacemaker. However, if the magnetic field does not affect the device, it can damage its components or deactivate the device when it is in a magnetic field.

Magnets made of neodymium are especially delicate, which leads to their breakage.

Magnets made of neodymium are highly fragile, and by joining them in an uncontrolled manner, they will crumble. Neodymium magnets are made of metal and coated with a shiny nickel surface, but they are not as hard as steel. In the event of a collision between two magnets, there may be a scattering of fragments in different directions. Protecting your eyes is crucial in such a situation.

Comparing neodymium magnets to ferrite magnets (found in speakers), they are 10 times more powerful, and their power can shock you.

Familiarize yourself with our information to correctly handle these magnets and avoid significant injuries to your body and prevent damage to the magnets.

You should keep neodymium magnets at a safe distance from the wallet, computer, and TV.

Strong magnetic fields emitted by neodymium magnets can damage magnetic storage media such as floppy disks, credit cards, magnetic ID cards, cassette tapes, video tapes, or other devices. In addition, they can damage televisions, VCRs, computer monitors, and CRT displays. You should especially avoid placing neodymium magnets near electronic devices.

Dust and powder from neodymium magnets are highly flammable.

Avoid drilling or mechanical processing of neodymium magnets. Once crushed into fine powder or dust, this material becomes highly flammable.

It is crucial not to allow the magnets to pinch together uncontrollably or place your fingers in their path as they attract to each other.

Magnets attract each other within a distance of several to around 10 cm from each other. Don't put your fingers in the path of magnet attraction, because a major injury may occur. Magnets, depending on their size, can even cut off a finger or there can be a serious pressure or a fracture.

Neodymium magnets can become demagnetized at high temperatures.

Even though magnets have been observed to maintain their efficacy up to temperatures of 80°C or 175°F, it's essential to consider that this threshold may fluctuate depending on the magnet's type, configuration, and intended usage.

Magnets are not toys, children should not play with them.

Neodymium magnets are not toys. You cannot allow them to become toys for children. In the case of small magnets, they can be swallowed and cause choking. In such cases, the only solution is to undergo surgery to remove the magnets, and otherwise, it can even lead to death.

The magnet coating contains nickel, so be cautious if you have a nickel allergy.

Studies show a small percentage of people have allergies to certain metals, including nickel. An allergic reaction often manifests as skin redness and rash. If you have a nickel allergy, try wearing gloves or avoid direct contact with nickel-plated neodymium magnets.

Under no circumstances should neodymium magnets be brought close to GPS and smartphones.

Magnetic fields interfere with compasses and magnetometers used in navigation for air and sea transport, as well as internal compasses of smartphones and GPS devices.

So that know how strong neodymium magnets are and why they are so dangerous, see the article - Dangerous very strong neodymium magnets.
