Neodymium disc magnets present a range of advantages compared to other magnet shapes, which cause them to be the best choice for numerous projects:
Contact Surface: Due to their flat shape, disc magnets provide a larger contact surface with adjoining parts, which is beneficial in applications requiring a stronger magnetic connection.
Applications in Technology: They are often used in different devices, like sensors, stepper motors, or speakers, where a thin and wide shape is crucial for their operation.
Mounting: The flat form's flat shape facilitates mounting, particularly when you need to adhere the magnet to a surface.
Design Flexibility: The flat shape of the magnets allows designers with greater flexibility in placing them in devices, which can sometimes be more difficult with magnets of other shapes.
Stability: In certain applications, the flat base of a disc magnet can provide better stability, reducing the risk of sliding or rotating. However, it's important to remember that the optimal shape of a magnet is dependent on the specific application and requirements. In some cases, other shapes, like cylindrical or spherical, might be a better choice.

Advantages as well as disadvantages of neodymium magnets NdFeB.

Apart from immense power, neodymium magnets have the following advantages:

  • They do not lose their power (of the magnet). After approximately 10 years, their strength decreases by only ~1% (theoretically),
  • They protect against demagnetization caused by external magnetic field very well,
  • In other words, thanks to the shiny coating of nickel, gold, or silver, the element acquires an aesthetic appearance,
  • They have very high magnetic induction on the surface of the magnet,
  • By using an appropriate combination of materials, they can achieve high thermal resistance, allowing them to operate at temperatures up to 230°C and above...
  • Due to the option of accurate forming and adaptation to individual needs – neodymium magnets can be produced in a wide range of shapes and sizes, which expands the range of their possible uses.
  • Wide application in the industry of new technologies – are used in computer drives, electric drive mechanisms, medical devices and other advanced devices.

Disadvantages of neodymium magnets:

  • They are prone to breaking as they are extremely fragile when subjected to a powerful impact. If the magnets are exposed to impacts, we recommend using magnets in a steel housing. The steel housing in the form of a holder protects the magnet from impacts and simultaneously increases its overall strength,
  • They lose strength at high temperatures. Most neodymium magnets experience permanent loss of strength when heated above 80°C (depending on the shape and height). However, we also offer special magnets with high temperature resistance, up to 230°C,
  • Magnets exposed to a humid environment can corrode. Therefore, when using them outdoors, we recommend using waterproof magnets made of rubber, plastic, or other moisture-resistant materials,
  • Limited ability to create threads or complex shapes in the magnet - the use of a housing is recommended - magnetic holder
  • Health risk to health from tiny fragments of magnets can be dangerous, if swallowed, which is crucial in the context of children's health. Additionally, small elements of these products are able to be problematic in medical diagnosis after entering the body.

Caution with Neodymium Magnets

Dust and powder from neodymium magnets are highly flammable.

Avoid drilling or mechanical processing of neodymium magnets. Once crushed into fine powder or dust, this material becomes highly flammable.

Keep neodymium magnets as far away as possible from GPS and smartphones.

Magnetic fields interfere with compasses and magnetometers used in navigation for air and sea transport, as well as internal compasses of smartphones and GPS devices.

Neodymium magnets can demagnetize at high temperatures.

Although magnets are generally resilient, their ability to maintain their magnetic potency can be influenced by factors like the type of material used, the magnet's shape, and the intended purpose for which it is employed.

The magnet coating contains nickel, so be cautious if you have a nickel allergy.

Studies show a small percentage of people have allergies to certain metals, including nickel. An allergic reaction often manifests as skin redness and rash. If you have a nickel allergy, try wearing gloves or avoid direct contact with nickel-plated neodymium magnets.

Neodymium magnets are the most powerful magnets ever created, and their power can shock you.

On our website, you can find information on how to use neodymium magnets. This will help you avoid injuries and prevent damage to the magnets.

Neodymium magnets can attract to each other due to their immense internal force, causing the skin and other body parts to get pinched and resulting in significant injuries.

If have a finger between or alternatively on the path of attracting magnets, there may be a serious cut or even a fracture.

Neodymium magnets are not recommended for people with pacemakers.

Neodymium magnets generate strong magnetic fields. As a result, they interfere with the operation of a pacemaker. This happens because such devices have a function to deactivate them in a magnetic field.

Under no circumstances should neodymium magnets be placed near a computer HDD, TV, and wallet.

Neodymium magnets produce intense magnetic fields that can damage magnetic media such as floppy disks, video tapes, HDDs, credit cards, magnetic ID cards, cassette tapes, or other devices. They can also damage devices like video players, televisions, CRT computer monitors. Do not forget to keep neodymium magnets at a safe distance from these electronic devices.

Neodymium magnets should not be around youngest children.

Neodymium magnets are not toys. Do not allow children to play with them. They can be a significant choking hazard. If multiple magnets are swallowed, they can attract to each other through the intestinal walls, causing significant injuries, and even death.

Magnets made of neodymium are particularly fragile, which leads to their breakage.

Neodymium magnets are highly delicate, and by joining them in an uncontrolled manner, they will crumble. Neodymium magnets are made of metal and coated with a shiny nickel, but they are not as durable as steel. At the moment of collision between the magnets, small metal fragments can be dispersed in different directions.

In order for you to know how powerful neodymium magnets are and why they are so dangerous, read the article - Dangerous strong neodymium magnets.
