Neodymium magnets MP 20x5x5 / N38 in a ring-shaped form are frequently used in various industries due to their unique properties. Thanks to a powerful magnetic field of 1.43 kg, which can be described as force, they are key in applications that require strong magnetism in a relatively small area. Usage of MP 20x5x5 / N38 magnets include electric motors, generating systems, sound devices, and several other devices that use magnets for producing motion or storing energy. Despite their powerful strength, they have a relatively low weight of 11.04 grams, which makes them more practical compared to bulkier alternatives.

Advantages and disadvantages of neodymium magnets NdFeB.

In addition to immense power, neodymium magnets have the following advantages:

  • They do not lose their power (of the magnet). After approximately 10 years, their strength decreases by only ~1% (theoretically),
  • They are extremely resistant to demagnetization by external magnetic field,
  • In other words, thanks to the glossy nickel, gold, or silver finish, the element gains an aesthetic appearance,
  • They have exceptionally high magnetic induction on the surface of the magnet,
  • By using an appropriate combination of materials, they can achieve significant thermal resistance, allowing them to operate at temperatures up to 230°C and above...
  • The ability for precise shaping and customization to specific needs – neodymium magnets can be produced in various forms and dimensions, which expands the range of their possible uses.
  • Significant importance in modern technologies – are utilized in computer drives, electric drive mechanisms, medical equipment or very modern machines.

Disadvantages of neodymium magnets:

  • They can break when subjected to a powerful impact. If the magnets are exposed to impacts, we recommend using magnets in a metal holder. The steel housing in the form of a holder protects the magnet from impacts, and at the same time increases its overall strength,
  • They lose power at high temperatures. Most neodymium magnets experience permanent loss of strength when heated above 80°C (depending on the shape and height). However, we also offer special magnets with high temperature resistance, up to 230°C,
  • Magnets exposed to a humid environment can corrode. Therefore, when using them outdoors, we suggest using waterproof magnets made of rubber, plastic, or other moisture-resistant materials,
  • The use of a cover or a magnetic holder is recommended due to the limited possibilities of manufacturing threads or complex shapes in the magnet
  • Health risk associated with microscopic parts of magnets can be dangerous, if swallowed, which is particularly important in the context of child safety. It's also worth noting that tiny parts of these devices can complicate diagnosis when they are in the body.

Be Cautious with Neodymium Magnets

Neodymium magnets can become demagnetized at high temperatures.

Although magnets have shown to retain their effectiveness up to 80°C or 175°F, this temperature may vary depending on the type of material, shape, and intended use of the magnet.

Avoid contact with neodymium magnets if you have a nickel allergy.

Studies show a small percentage of people have allergies to certain metals, including nickel. An allergic reaction often manifests as skin redness and rash. If you have a nickel allergy, try wearing gloves or avoid direct contact with nickel-plated neodymium magnets.

Do not bring neodymium magnets close to GPS and smartphones.

Neodymium magnets are a source of strong magnetic fields that cause interference with magnetometers and compasses used in navigation, as well as internal compasses of smartphones and GPS devices.

It is crucial not to allow the magnets to pinch together uncontrollably or place your fingers in their path as they attract to each other.

If you have a finger between or alternatively on the path of attracting magnets, there may be a large cut or even a fracture.

Magnets should not be treated as toys. Therefore, it is not recommended for children to have access to them.

Not all neodymium magnets are toys, so do not let children play with them. In such a situation, surgery is necessary to remove them. In the worst case scenario, it can result in death.

Magnets made of neodymium are highly susceptible to damage, leading to breaking.

Neodymium magnetic are delicate and will break if allowed to collide with each other, even from a distance of a few centimeters. Despite being made of metal as well as coated with a shiny nickel plating, they are not as hard as steel. In the case of a collision between two magnets, there can be a scattering of small sharp metal fragments in different directions. Protecting your eyes is essential.

Neodymium magnets are over 10 times more powerful than ferrite magnets (the ones in speakers), and their strength can shock you.

Make sure to review all the information we have provided. This will help you avoid harm to your body and damage to the magnets.

Keep neodymium magnets away from people with pacemakers.

Neodymium magnets generate very strong magnetic fields that can interfere with the operation of a pacemaker. This happens because such devices have a function to deactivate them in a magnetic field.

You should keep neodymium magnets at a safe distance from the wallet, computer, and TV.

Strong fields generated by neodymium magnets can damage magnetic storage media such as floppy disks, credit cards, magnetic ID cards, cassette tapes, video tapes, or other similar devices. In addition, they can damage televisions, VCRs, computer monitors, and CRT displays. Avoid placing neodymium magnets in close proximity to electronic devices.

Dust and powder from neodymium magnets are highly flammable.

Avoid drilling or mechanical processing of neodymium magnets. If the magnet is crushed into fine powder or dust, it becomes highly flammable.

So you are aware of why neodymium magnets are so dangerous, see the article titled How dangerous are powerful neodymium magnets?.
