Advantages as well as disadvantages of neodymium magnets NdFeB.

Apart from immense strength, neodymium magnets have the following advantages:

  • They do not lose strength over time - after 10 years, their strength decreases by only ~1% (theoretically),
  • They are exceptionally resistant to demagnetization caused by an external magnetic field,
  • In other words, thanks to the glossy nickel, gold, or silver finish, the element gains an aesthetic appearance,
  • They possess very high magnetic induction on the surface of the magnet,
  • By using an appropriate combination of materials, they can achieve significant thermal resistance, allowing them to operate at temperatures up to 230°C and above...
  • The ability for precise shaping or customization to specific needs – neodymium magnets can be produced in many variants of shapes and sizes, which amplifies their universality in usage.
  • Wide application in modern technologies – find application in HDD drives, electric drive mechanisms, medical apparatus and very advanced devices.

Disadvantages of neodymium magnets:

  • They can break as they are extremely fragile when subjected to a strong impact. If the magnets are exposed to impacts, it is suggested using magnets in a protective case. The steel housing in the form of a holder protects the magnet from impacts and also increases its overall strength,
  • They lose strength at high temperatures. Most neodymium magnets experience permanent loss of strength when heated above 80°C (depending on the shape and height). However, we also offer special magnets with high temperature resistance, up to 230°C,
  • Magnets exposed to a humid environment can corrode. Therefore, when using them outdoors, we recommend using waterproof magnets made of rubber, plastic, or other moisture-resistant materials,
  • Limited ability to create threads or complex shapes in the magnet - the use of a housing is recommended - magnetic holder
  • Health risk arising from small pieces of magnets are risky, in case of ingestion, which becomes significant in the context of children's health. Additionally, tiny parts of these devices have the potential to complicate diagnosis after entering the body.

Exercise Caution with Neodymium Magnets

Keep neodymium magnets away from the wallet, computer, and TV.

Strong magnetic fields emitted by neodymium magnets can damage magnetic storage media such as floppy disks, credit cards, magnetic ID cards, cassette tapes, video tapes, or other devices. They can also damage televisions, VCRs, computer monitors, and CRT displays. You should especially avoid placing neodymium magnets near electronic devices.

Avoid bringing neodymium magnets close to a phone or GPS.

Neodymium magnets generate strong magnetic fields that interfere with magnetometers and compasses used in navigation, as well as internal compasses of smartphones and GPS devices.

Neodymium magnetic are delicate and can easily break as well as get damaged.

Magnets made of neodymium are extremely fragile, and by joining them in an uncontrolled manner, they will break. Magnets made of neodymium are made of metal and coated with a shiny nickel, but they are not as durable as steel. In the event of a collision between two magnets, there may be a scattering of fragments in different directions. Protecting your eyes is crucial in such a situation.

Neodymium magnets can demagnetize at high temperatures.

In certain circumstances, Neodymium magnets may experience demagnetization when subjected to high temperatures.

Magnets are not toys, youngest should not play with them.

Neodymium magnets are not toys. Do not allow children to play with them. They can be a significant choking hazard. If multiple magnets are swallowed, they can attract to each other through the intestinal walls, causing significant injuries, and even death.

Neodymium Magnets can attract to each other due to their immense internal force, causing the skin and other body parts to get pinched and resulting in significant swellings.

Magnets attract each other within a distance of several to around 10 cm from each other. Don't put your fingers in the path of magnet attraction, as a serious injury may occur. Depending on how massive the neodymium magnets are, they can lead to a cut or alternatively a fracture.

The magnet is coated with nickel - be careful if you have an allergy.

Studies show a small percentage of people have allergies to certain metals, including nickel. An allergic reaction often manifests as skin redness and rash. If you have a nickel allergy, try wearing gloves or avoid direct contact with nickel-plated neodymium magnets.

Neodymium magnets are over 10 times stronger than ferrite magnets (the ones in speakers), and their power can surprise you.

Read the information on our website on how to properly utilize neodymium magnets and avoid significant harm to your body and unintentional damage to the magnets.

Neodymium magnets should not be near people with pacemakers.

Neodymium magnets generate strong magnetic fields. As a result, they interfere with the operation of a pacemaker. This happens because such devices have a function to deactivate them in a magnetic field.

Dust and powder from neodymium magnets are highly flammable.

Avoid drilling or mechanical processing of neodymium magnets. Once crushed into fine powder or dust, this material becomes highly flammable.

In order to illustrate why neodymium magnets are so dangerous, see the article - How dangerous are strong neodymium magnets?.
